Deputies arrest man for burglary, said he'd been attempting to access any unlocked vehicle since arriving in Carson City
A 57-year-old transient man was arrested for a vehicle burglary after “going around attempting to get into anybody’s vehicle if it was open” in an attempt to steal items from the vehicles allegedly to buy food, according to the report.
David Allen Wensloff was arrested after deputies were dispatched to the are of E. Proctor Street and North Plaza on a report of a vehicle burglary just after 5 a.m.
When deputies arrived they observed an individual, later identified as Wensloff, with a shopping cart in the parking lot just east of Proctor Street. The subject was walking away from a vehicle with a shopping cart full of items. The vehicle’s trunk and both back doors were wide open, and miscellaneous items were laying everywhere in the street, according to the report.
Deputies stopped Wensloff and asked if the vehicle belonged to him, at which point he stated, “No.”
Deputies placed Wensloff in handcuffs, and Wensloff agreed to speak with deputies.
He’s stated that all of the items in the shopping cart came from that vehicle and that the cart was empty before he approached the vehicle.
He told deputies that he discovered the vehicle was unlocked and began taking items out and placing them in the shopping cart. He said he was going to take the items to a pawn shop and use the money to purchase food.
He told deputies he’s been in Carson City for approximately three days and stated, “I been going around attempting to get into anybody’s vehicle if it was open.”
Deputies spoke with the owner of the vehicle, who was able to verbally identify every item that deputies mentioned to him, and provided prices for most of the items. He stated he had left his vehicle in the parking lot two days prior. Deputies told the owner that they had placed all of his items in the trunk and back seat of the vehicle and told him they had secured the front and rear doors, but were unable to secure the trunk of the vehicle. The owner stated it was okay and he would come down and secure the car later in the day.
Wensloff was taken into custody for Felony Burglary and Felony Possession of Stolen Property.
Bail: $20,000
