Carson City Senior Center celebrates Veterans Day
The Carson City Senior Center presented a salute to Carson City veterans Thursday. The program featured Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell and members of the Carson High School JROTC representing each branch of the United States Military.
The CHS JROTC color guard opened the program by presenting the colors and Mayor Crowell led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Each of the JROTC members, Cadet Sonnemaker, Merchant Marines, Cadet Redmond, Navy, Cadet Zanor, Marine Corps, Cadet Bergren, Coast Guard, and Cadet Dendry, Air Force, spoke on their respective branches of service.
Crowell asked veterans to stand if they served in combat in World War II. Two gentlemen stood, one of whom also served in the Korean War. Still more stood for Vietnam. Crowell then recognized veterans from each branch of service.
“On behalf of a grateful community, we thank you for your service,” Crowell said. “Welcome home.”
Children from Mark Twain Elementary School wrote cards and drew pictures for the veterans, a group of whom were so moved by the gifts they went to visit the school to thank the students in person.
Courtney Warner, executive director for the Senior Center, said Veterans Day is one of the more popular programs the Center offers.
“We have a robust population of veterans,” she said. “We look forward every year to honoring them.”
