Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health to use settlement money for immunization efforts
Carson City – A settlement reached with pharmaceutical GlaxoSmithKline and the Nevada Attorney General's Office will give the state's Division of Public and Behavioral Health more than $1 million as part of the agreement with the money going toward immunization initiatives.
“Immunizations have significantly reduced morbidity and mortality rates among children and adults in the United States,” said Tracey D. Green, MD, Chief Medical officer. “Vaccine preventable diseases have many social and economic costs. These diseases can result in doctors’ visits, hospitalizations and even premature deaths.
"Immunizations are an essential public health prevention tool for preventing disease and it is important to assure access to appropriate immunizations through the life span to create a robust community immunity. The funding will also support immunization initiatives across the lifespan including seniors through aging,’’ she said.
“We are happy to be able to assist the Division with this immunization initiative,” said Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto. “The initiative will make a real difference in improving the public health of Nevada.”
The Division was awarded $1,072,883 as part of the settlement. The funding will support the following immunization initiatives:
— Vaccinate before you graduate (targeting young adults preparing to graduate)
— Immunizing parents and care givers of newborn babies –to cocoon (protect) the newborns (who cannot be immunized until 2 months of age) from infections associated with vaccine preventable diseases (specifically
influenza and pertussis)
— Immunize immunocompromised individuals including those individual chronically ill with HIV/AIDs and their close family members to prevent infection from vaccine preventable diseases in this susceptible population
— Immunize the gay, lesbian and transgendered and at risk populations
— Provide immunizations such as flu, pneumonia, and shingles to the aging population in Nevada.
