Misfits Theatre Performance Gives a Boost to Dayton Food Pantry
The Dayton Food Pantry is truly a community-owned project. So many Dayton area individuals and groups from every part of the town contribute to keep the Dayton Food Pantry going. Among those pitching in to help is the local theatre group, The Misfits.
Misfits Theatre Performance Raises Over $800 for Pantry
The Misfits Theatre Group’s October production of Tony Thornburg’s The Unspeakables, Or Tea Time in Dayton, raised over $800 for the Dayton Food Pantry. The production, directed by Dan Rice, takes place in Dayton during the 1920s, in and around Odeon Hall. Others contributing to the performance included Donna Crowell, Amy Watchtel, Jan Duke, Andrea Woolman, Shelia Steele, Suzanne Crawford, Erin Copp, Mike Cline, George Bohl, and Jim Crawford. The nonprofit Group, organized in 2004, promotes arts, education, and Nevada history through theatre.
Businesses, County, and Nonprofits Help: Among on-going donations, Dayton Valley Nursery provides extra storage for the Pantry and advertises services on its reader board on Dayton Valley Road; Healthy Communities Coalition directed recent fundraising proceeds to the Pantry and its staff writes grants for the pantry on an on-going basis; Community Roots nonprofit nursery donated excess vegetables and fruit to the Pantry throughout the summer, and Smith’s grocery has been a continual supporter with large donations of all kinds. Lyon County Utilities picks up the tab for water, BCB Ventures generously donates the valuable building space at 4 Enterprise Way, and local businesses like Curves have been steady supporters with food and donation drives throughout the year.
All Dayton Schools Provide On-Going Help: Dayton High School Principal Wayne Workman notes, “We’re all in this together.” His attitude is typical among the school staff and students, with many of the student groups leading additional drives for particular items for the Food Pantry throughout the year. Freida Carbery, director of the Food Pantry, explained that Damon Etter’s Dayton High Leadership group carries the heavy food boxes for elders during each distribution day. Dayton High School’s Honor Society, with advisor Shanna Krueger, organized a very successful food drive during the DHS football game last week. Dayton Intermediate’s large Leadership group, and their advisor Maria Sauter, led a pasta/noodle drive for the pantry in October. In addition, every school in Dayton also hosted a food drive for Thanksgiving dinner trimmings through November 1.
Fall Yard Sale Helped: The Pantry offers a variety of ways for the community to be included, from volunteering to yard sales to food drives and benefits. The October Food Pantry Yard Sale netted over $1,400, thanks to volunteers who set up and sorted items, and the many people who donated items and shopped at the sale.
Contact: If you'd like to donate, volunteer or organize a food drive or benefit for the Pantry, call Freida Carbery at (775) 246-7834. Dayton Valley Food Pantry is now located at is 4 Enterprise Way in Dayton off of Hwy 50 and is open 10am to 5pm Monday through Friday.
