Carson City looks for ways to improve art and culture
Creating more public art and arts festivals along with more collaboration among artist groups were among the suggestions presented at the Arts Town Meeting on Tuesday evening at the Brewery Arts Center.
Kurt Meyer said his son, an art major at the University of Nevada, Reno, is impressed with the murals that have recently been painted around town. Meyer said he would like to see the community embrace similar projects.
“Selfishly, I want this town to be the place my boys come back to to raise their children,” he said. “I think encouraging things like this is how we make that happen.”
The Nevada Arts Council partnered with the Carson City Visitors Bureau to host the meeting, as part of its statewide effort to gather data and ideas generated in community discussions.
The project comes on the heels of Carson City hiring Mark Salinas as its first arts and culture director as a way to increase arts in the community and promote cultural tourism.
“This new venture we’re doing is truly going to be the most impactful part of my career,” said Joel Dunn, executive director of the Carson City Visitors Bureau. “I’m really thankful and proud to be a part of all of this.”
The meeting started with the nearly 60 participants naming the community’s assets, which included location, breadth of artists, diversity, history and museums.
It was followed by listing challenges and suggested solutions.
“Oftentimes, nonprofits need to partner with private enterprise in order to further what they are doing,” said Supervisor Karen Abowd.
Input from meetings across the state will be organized and shared with co-sponsors and attendees. The Nevada Arts Council will work with local governments and groups to set arts and cultural priorities for the future.
“This is the community’s opportunity to speak and be heard about their vision for arts in our lives,” said Susan Boskoff, executive director of the council.
Salinas said he will use the discussion in his work as well.
“I’m here to listen to your voices and add that to my experience to help find solutions for your needs,” he said. “Together, we can build a better Carson City for those who live here as well as for those who visit.”
