Recent NV Energy rate changes bring lower bills to Northern Nevada customers
NV Energy northern Nevada electric customers will see their monthly bills lowered by $2.30 a month beginning this month as a result of two rate decreases that went into effect on Oct. 1. This is the fourth time this year that northern Nevada customers have experienced a rate decrease.
The overall electric decrease of $25.9 million reflects reductions in the cost of fuel used in power production at the company’s generating stations and power purchase agreements, according to an NV Energy news release.
Fuel and purchased power costs are passed through to customers at no mark-up so there is no profit to the company. The reduced prices are the result of both lower fuel costs and lower total energy costs as a result of NV Energy’s efforts to procure more low-cost power, including more renewable energy resources.
The Natural Disaster Protection Plan rate also went into effect this month to cover the cost of programs statewide that help protect the public from the impacts of wildfires and other natural disasters on NV Energy’s electric infrastructure, including but not limited to vegetation management, system strengthening and public safety education.
Funds collected from this charge are directly used for investments that provide a more reliable electric system, reduce the risk of wildfires and prepare the electric grid in Nevada to withstand the effects of other natural disasters.
With these rate changes the average single family residential electric customer will see a decrease of $2.30 a month.
“NV Energy is committed to keeping customer rates low and stable while providing energy saving programs that can help our customers save even more, at the same time NV Energy is committed to ensuring the safety of our communities and protecting our communities from the impacts of natural disasters that have been experienced in other western states,” said Doug Cannon, NV Energy President and Chief Executive Officer.
