Fun for kids and teens: Youth sports, agriculture, fundraising and more all summer long in Carson City

The Carson City School District provided the following list of community activities for or in support of youth organizations throughout the summer.

Carson High Football will host a Senator Youth Football Camp for athletes K-8th grade, Monday through Wednesday, June 17-19. The camp will run from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Carson High School Football Field. The three-day clinic is designed to polish football techniques and skills will be lead by Carson High Football Staff and Players. The cost is $80 per player and includes a t-shirt and dessert on the last day of camp. Register by scanning the QR Code in the attached flyers in English and Spanish. Carson High Tennis will host a Youth Clinic for boys and girls in 3rd-8th grade, June 17-20, from 8:00-11:30 a.m. each day at 1111 Saliman Road in Carson City. Cost for the clinic is $100 per athlete. Rackets and tennis balls will be provided. Use the QR Code in the attached flyer to register or contact jminifie@carson.k12.nv.us.

Northern Nevada's Top Female Hurdling Athletes will host a Hurdle Clinic for middle and high-school-age track athletes interested in learning techniques, drills and exercises to strengthen hurdling form. The clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, Saturday, June 29, at the Carson Middle School Track. There is no cost for the clinic, but participants are asked to RSVP (text or call) to Anne Davis, 775-420-7254. See attached flyer for more information.

Beginning June 20, 2024, Dayton Valley Golf Course and Empire Ranch Golf Course will host a Summer Golf Season for Little Golfers 7U (a team for 5, 6 and 7 year-olds) and 10U (a team for 8, 9 and 10-year-olds). Carson City Pop Warner will host a registration event for the 2024 Football and Cheer Season for youth ages 5-14. The registration event will be Saturday, June 22, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Governors Field, 500 Evalyn Drive at the Equipment Shack. Registration closes June 22. The Wild Sheep Foundation will host an Outdoor Expo for youth and families Saturday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Capitol City Gun Club, 3590 Arrowhead Drive in Carson City. See attached flyer for more information.

Western Nevada College Continuing Education will host College for Kids: iLead, a summer program to help give students confidence to step into leadership. The week-long program will be held in three sessions: June 10-14 and June 24-28, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Ages 9 and older are welcome. The University of Nevada, Reno College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources in partnership with 4-H invites youth ages 9-12 to 3-day Summer Camps June 12-14 and again August 6-8, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, at 727 Fairview Drive, Suite F, in Carson City. Cost is $15 per week. Snacks and refreshments included. See attached flyer for more information.

Western Nevada College Continuing Education will host College for Kids: Summer Sports Camp, which will include a combination of mountain biking, hiking, martial arts, community services & education, softball/baseball, archery, general fitness, flag football, inline skating and more. The week-long program will be held in four sessions: July 8-12, July 22-26, August 5-9 and August 12-16, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Ages 8-14 are welcome. All kids entering 4th-8th grade are invited to attend the Carson High School Youth Running Camp, July 29 - August 2, at the Pete Livermore Sports Sports Complex. The program was designed by the Carson High Varsity Cross Country Team to teach kids a little about strength, endurance and stretching. But mostly, the kids have fun! The cost is $80 per runner. Carson High School Wrestling will host a fundraising Golf Tournament Saturday, June 15, 9 a.m., at Silver Oak Golf Course. 100% of money raised will help fund the Carson High School Wrestling program and the Bing Blood Scholarship. Cost: $400 for a team of 4 or $125 per player (includes lunch). Registration closes June 10. There will be prizes for First Place, the Biggest Loser, Best Dressed Team and Best Team Name. The final counts are in, here are the final unofficial 2024 Primary Election results from Carson City.

While staying at the enchanting Renaissance recently, I had a view of the Truckee River, and a half dozen homeless folks dwelling there on her silent shores. They pretty much kept to themselves until a gregarious gentleman came along with something to eat that he passed out to one after another until they were all up and around on the riverbank, bargaining and trading with what little they had to offer. This was quite possibly their main meal for the day, and they were exhibiting great gladness in celebrating it.

Rabbits are overrunning our property. Initially, it was cute to see tiny bunnies. While cottontails only live 12 to 15 months, they can have two to six litters per year, each with five to six young. They only have a 28-to-29-day gestation period, and females breed again within hours of giving birth.
