Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report for week of Oct. 10-16

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Oct. 10-16, 2016. Work will continue on the Downtown Corridor improvement project on Carson Street. The following streets will be impacted:

— Monday at 6 a.m. to Tuesday, 7a.m., Carson Street will be closed from the south side of Robinson to the north side of 7th Street including all side streets.
— Tuesday through Friday, Carson Street will be closed from the south side of Robinson to the north side of 5th Street, including all side streets. There will be business access between Robinson and Proctor.

Days of closures subject to change due to weather issues. Downtown businesses are open during construction. For details regarding traffic impacts, including a road closure, please refer to the material provided in local media outlets or go to arsonproud.com for more information. These sources are updated weekly throughout the duration of the project.

Lane closures with traffic controls are at the following locations due to utility/road work:
— Robinson Street will be closed between Fall and Stewart Streets, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
— U.S. 395 between Old Clear Creek Road and Snyder Avenue will have single and double lane closures in both directions Monday through Thursday, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
— U.S. 395 between Old Clear Creek Road and Snyder Avenue will have a single northbound lane closed between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
— Winnie Lane will be narrowed between Mountain and Division Streets, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Road closures expected at the following locations due to utility/road work. Please follow detours:
— Topsy Lane will be closed between Center Drive and U.S. 395, Monday through Sunday, for all hours, local traffic only.
— Bigelow Drive will be closed to through traffic at Snyder Avenue, all week, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
— Telegraph Street will be closed between Nevada and Division Streets, Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The following Lake Tahoe and Sierra area road report from Caltrans is for the week of Oct. 9-15, 2016:
State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway.

October 9-14, State Route 89 (Placer County) from St. Michael’s Court to Sugar Pine Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 10 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday for drainage work.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $13 million water quality improvement project from Cascade Road to the Eagle Falls Viaduct over Emerald Bay. The project is constructing new drainage facilities to treat stormwater runoff and repaving a four-mile section of the highway.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from Cascade Road to Upper Emerald Bay Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday for shoulder work.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $25 million project from the "Y" junction with U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe to Cascade Road, north of Camp Richardson. Curb, gutter and sidewalks are being built in the 1.1-mile four-lane section, and the highway will be widened in the two-lane section to Visitor Center Road to provide 4-foot paved shoulders on each side.

October 10-14, State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from the “Y” intersection with U.S. Highway 50 to 15th Street: Northbound and southbound motorists can expect the No. 2 lane closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday for shoulder work. Motorists can also expect one-way traffic control from West Way to Cascade Road from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday for shoulder work.

State Route 28 (Placer County): Work continues on Placer County’s $50 million Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project from State Route 267 to Chipmunk Street. Highway work includes installing curb and gutter, sidewalks, roundabouts, lighting and drainage systems to enhance pedestrian and bicycle mobility, improve safety and provide water-quality improvements. Completion is expected this fall.

State Route 28 (Placer County) from Beach Avenue to Deer Street: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Wednesday for utility work. Motorists also can expect one-way traffic control from Fox Street to Beaver Street from 4 a.m.to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday for paving.

State Route 28 (Placer County) from Lardin Way to Chinquapin from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday for shoulder work.

State Route 49 (El Dorado County) from the junction with State Route 193 to Borland Street/Lincoln Way in Auburn: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday for guardrail repair.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) at Cameron Park Drive: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect the #1 lane closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday for bridge work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) at Red Hawk Drive: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect the #1 lane closed from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday for bridge work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Bedford Avenue to Canal Street: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect the #2 lane closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Saturday for bridge work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from 5 Mile Road/Paul Bunyan Road to 8 Mile Road/Cedar Grove: Eastbound motorists can expect left-turn pockets closed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekends during Apple Hill season for safety reasons during Apple Hill season.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Strawberry Lodge Drive to Johnson Pass Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations around the clock from midnight Monday to 7 p.m. Thursday for striping, utility and pavement work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Johnson Pass Road to Hopi Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday for pavement repair.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) at Baljibou Road: Eastbound motorists can expect the No. 2 lane closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon Friday for curb, gutter and sidewalk work.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from the junction with U.S. Highway 50 to Shakori Drive: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday for drainage cleaning.

State Route 89 (Placer County) from Meeks Bay Avenue to Wilson Avenue in Tahoma: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m.to noon Friday for tree work.

State Route 193 (El Dorado County) at the South Fork of the American River/Chili Bar: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday for bridge work.

State Route 267 (Placer County) from Carnelian Bay Avenue to the junction with State Route 28 in Kings Beach: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. Monday through Friday for pavement striping.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Brace Road to Magra Road: Work is nearly completed on the $36 million project which increased the vertical clearance of nine bridge structures in south Placer County to 16 feet, 6 inches. The vertical clearance was increased on seven structures by lifting the existing bridge deck and the other two had the roadway below dug down.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) in a one-mile section under and adjacent to the Brace Road overcrossing: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect alternating lane closures as electrical sensors are installed in the roadway. No traffic interfering work scheduled for this week.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Long Ravine underpass to .2 miles east of Magra Road overcrossing: Roadwork begins for the 2.5 year, $50.6 million project to construct at 3 miles of additional ‘truck climbing lane’ and other improvements to primarily eastbound I-80 east of Colfax including widening the Cape Horn undercrossing bridge.

October 9-15, Interstate 80 (Placer County) at the Cape Horn Undercrossing Bridge: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls for around-the-clock alternating lane closures from June 20 throughout the summer for bridge work.

Interstate 80 - Eastbound (Placer County) from Hwy 174/I-80 junction to Secret Town over crossing: Motorists can expect overnight right lane and shoulder closures from 6 p.m. to 11 a.m., Monday through Thursday and from 6 p.m. Thursday to 9 a.m. Friday, October 10-14 for roadway excavation.

State Route 20 (Nevada County) from Scott’s Flat Road to Skillman Campground: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, Oct. 10-14 for ditch cleaning.

State Route 20 (Nevada County) from Placer County line to Nevada Street: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, Oct. 11-14 for paving operations.

State Route 20 (Nevada County) from I-80/Hwy 20 junction to Harmony Ridge Road: Motorists can expect alternating lane closures and one way traffic controls from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 12-13 for tree work.

State Route 20 (Nevada County) from Yuba County line to Penn Valley Drive/Rough and Ready Highway: Motorists can expect overnight moving one way traffic controls from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday night through Friday morning, Oct. 9-14 for striping operations.

State Route 49 - Southbound (Placer County) from South Fork Dry Creek to Lorenson Road/Florence Lane: Motorists can expect overnight one way traffic controls from 7 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13-14 for electrical work.

State Route 49 - Northbound (Placer County) from Willow Creek to Bell Road: Motorists can expect right lane closure from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct.13 for electrical work.

State Route 49 (El Dorado/Placer County) from Hwy 193 junction (Cool) to Borland Street/Lincoln Way: Motorists can expect right lane closure from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10 for guardrail repair.

State Route 49 (Sierra County) from Gold Lake Road/Greene Road to Yuba Pass summit: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Oct. 10-13 for miscellaneous work.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) at the Kingvale overcrossing: Motorists can expect full ramp closures from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday Oct. 10 (eastbound) or Tuesday Oct. 11 (westbound) through Thursday, Oct. 13 for tree work.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) at the Kingvale overcrossing: Motorists can expect right shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday (westbound) and on Tuesday (eastbound) Oct. 11-12 for electrical work.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) at the Roseville Parkway overcrossing: Motorists can expect overnight closure of the left lane of the Parkway over I-80 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday through 5 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12-15 for bridge work.

Interstate 80 – Westbound (Placer County) at the Whitmore grade just west of Nyack: Motorists can expect right shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12 for electrical work.

Interstate 80 – Westbound (Placer County) at the Atlantic Street exit: Motorists can expect overnight alternating full ramp closures of Atlantic Street and Eureka Road from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday night through 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11-14 for pavement work.

Interstate 80 – Westbound (Placer County) from the Alta Road undercrossing to Monte Vista overcrossing (Dutch Flat): Motorists can expect right shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday Oct. 11 for drainage cleaning.

Interstate 80 - Westbound (Nevada/Placer County) from Donner Summit rest area to Kingvale undercrossing: Motorists can expect alternating lane and shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Oct. 11-13 for tree work.

Interstate 80 (Nevada County) at the Soda Springs overcrossing: Motorists can expect right shoulder closures both eastbound and westbound from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 for electrical work.

Interstate 80 – Westbound (Nevada County) at the Soda Springs over crossing: Motorists can expect full westbound ramp closure from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Oct. 11-13 for tree work.

Interstate 80 – Westbound (Nevada County) at the westbound on-ramp to Central Truckee: Motorists can expect a full ramp closure from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12 for shoulder work.

Interstate 80 – Eastbound (Placer County) from the Illinoistown overcrossing/Canyon Way to the Hwy 174/I-80 separator: Motorists can expect left lane, shoulder and median closures from 8:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Oct. 12 for median barrier work.

Lane closures and travel delays will begin Wednesday, Nov. 13 on U.S. 95 Alternate in Yerington as the Nevada Department of Transportation makes roadway drainage improvements.

The Morgan Mill High-Water Mark unveiling will be held on Nov. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Morgan Mill River Access Area, 5597 Morgan Mill Road. UPDATE: Due to increased fire weather conditions, NV Energy has upgraded a Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) Watch to Warning status in Genoa, southwestern Carson City and Virginia City Highlands in northern Nevada for today, Nov. 13 and into tomorrow morning.
A PSOM warning means a de-energization is likely to prevent the possibility of sparking a wildfire.

A storm expected to move into the region Wednesday has prompted NV Energy to issue a Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) warning for southwest Carson City to Genoa and the Virginia City Highlands.

UPDATE: NV Energy has de-activated approximately 5,500 electricity customers in Washoe County in the area of the fire at Callahan Ranch.

NV Energy reports 2,636 customers without power Monday morning in Carson City. The outage was reported at 9:46 a.m. At this time there is not an estimated time of restoration. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE 5PM: Fire crews will be mopping up the Callahan Fire overnight and into tomorrow. One primary residential structure was lost along with multiple outbuildings. The cause is under investigation at this time. Some fire evacuations remain in place at Callahan Rd and Fawn Lane as crews mop up hot spots. See Perimetermap.com here for evacuation updates.

UPDATE 12:55PM: The fire is estimated at approximately 100 acres; approximately 3,000 people have been impacted by evacuations. Rain is falling on the fire scene. Additional Strike Teams totaling 10-15 engines have begun arriving to assist on the fire, according to Eastern Sierra Fire and Ice, which tracks fires in the region.

Just before 11 a.m. on Monday, the Washoe County Alert system sent out an evacuation notice to residents in the Callahan Ranch area stating they should evacuate immediately.

The evacuation point is at South Valleys Library located at 15650A Wedge Pkwy, Reno.

Dayton Elementary students were treated Friday to a helicopter fly-in by the Nevada National Guard as part of the school's Veterans Day program.

A team from Nevada National Guard landed a helicopter on the soccer field after the school's Veterans Day assembly. Dayton Elementary is the only school in Lyon County that is a Purple Star School.

Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11 and is a federal holiday to honor all veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. A number of events are planned in Carson City and surrounding counties.

The Carson City School District is proud to recognize Carson City Toyota as its November Community Partner of the Month as a Legacy Level partner, the highest level, for their ongoing commitment to supporting local schools and for their generous financial and in-kind contributions to enhance the educational experience for students in Carson City for more than 25 years.

Charle Abowd, a world renowned, award-winning chef and restaurateur but even more than that a philanthropist and community fixture for decades, died Saturday evening, according to longtime friends.

Abowd, 73, was a pioneer in farm to table dining, along with his wife Karen who co-owned Cafe at Adele's, he was a champion and supporter of music and the arts. He was a man who dedicated himself to lifting up others.
