Carson City children to trick or treat on Halloween night this year
Trick-or-treating in the Nevada state capital will occur on Halloween night — Monday, October 31 — this year, according to the Carson City Manager’s Office.
Rachael Porcari confirmed that children in Carson City will be trick-or-treating on the same night as everyone else.
“The only time it gets moved is when Halloween lands on a Saturday, the same day as the Nevada Day Parade,” she said.
In 2015, trick-or-treating in the Nevada state capital was moved to Friday, Oct. 30, because the Halloween holiday shared the same day — Saturday — as the Nevada Day Parade.
Porcari said the Carson City Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting to announce a change in the trick-or-treating schedule during years when Oct. 31 falls on a Saturday.
No meeting was held this year, she said, because Halloween — October 31 — lands on a Monday, and trick-or-treating will be held that night.
The Nevada Day Parade, meanwhile, continues to be held on the last Saturday in October, per Nevada state law, while observance of the state holiday remains the day before — the last Friday of the month.
In 2000, the Nevada State Legislature declared the last Friday in October as the official observance of Nevada Day and moved the parade to the last Saturday in October.
Since then, trick-or-treating in Carson City has moved to a different night every few years whenever October 31 lands on a Saturday, sharing the same day as the Nevada Day Parade.
Occasional alterations of the trick-or-treating schedule makes the Nevada State Capital unique from other communities both state and nationwide.
And while the change can be inconvenient, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Families throughout the region have the opportunity double-dip by trick-or-treating one night in Carson City and another night elsewhere.
Schools, government, businesses and organizations that close for the Nevada Day holiday will continue doing so on the last Friday of the month — or Oct. 28 this year — even though October 31 is the actual calendar date on which Nevada was achieved statehood.
This means no day off on Monday.
According to future annual calendars, October 31 won’t fall on a Saturday again for another four years, until the year 2020.
