Preparing for disaster: Carson City emergency managers host hazard mitigation workshop
Carson City Emergency Management and the Carson City Fire Department will host a planning and community hazard mitigation open house and workshop Thursday, marking the 100th anniversary of the historic 1915 Nevada Pleasant Valley earthquake that happened 50 miles south of Winnemucca and considered the strongest earthquake ever recorded in Nevada.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency requires cities to update their plans every five years in order to frequently assess and address the changing threat of natural hazards. A planning group, comprised of city and state agencies, private organizations, other agencies, including utilities, has selected a list of potential hazards that could occur within the Carson City area. Some of the hazards include: flooding, severe weather, earthquakes, and wildfire.
The open house begins at 4 p.m. with special guest speakers addressing several of the key hazards identified. Earthquake expert Craig DePolo, from the University of Nevada, Reno will talk about past earthquake events and future predictions. The even runs until 7 p.m. at Fire Station 51, 777 S. Stewart Street, Carson City.
Natural hazards have the potential to cause property loss, loss of life, economic hardship, and threats to public health and safety, according to a news release by the fire department and emergency management.
While an important aspect of emergency management deals with disaster recovery (the actions that a community takes to repair damages), an equally important aspect of emergency management involves hazard mitigation — sustained actions taken to reduce long-term risk to life and property. They are things we do today to be more protected in the future.
The public is encouraged to attend. The event runs between 4pm and 7 pm, October 1, 2015 at Fire Station 51, 777 S. Stewart Street, Carson City. Citizens can provide feedback to the planning team in helping to build a more resilient Carson City. Speakers begin at 5pm.
