Senator Square: Carson High School homecoming is here

The excitement at Carson High School right now is off the chart as every student prepares for Homecoming and all the fun and festivities that come along with its arrival. Beginning at 1 p.m., every student in the school hustled to the CHS big gym to prepare for and celebrate everything from the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to the upcoming crowning of the 2016 Homecoming Queen and King.

The assembly began with all students rising and the CHS band and choir performing America’s National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner with members of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corp carrying their flags. The CHS cheerleaders then performed a routine representing Homecoming Week’s theme “Decades”, a compilation of songs beginning with the 1950s.

Also, teacher Angila Golik asked all CHS students to donate non-perishables to Food for Thought of Carson City that takes place at Monday’s bonfire at the CHS practice football field. Finally, though there are other assembly activities, there's the Respect Rap for the upcoming Week of Respect, Oct. 3-7, written and performed by the brave freshman Honors English students of Mr. Brady’s class.

Bring out the Homecoming Duds
Dress-up days for Homecoming week are: Move to The West Monday, so come dressed in western wear; Hang-Ten Tuesday, which is a beach 60’s theme. Leis will also be on sale in the student store for $1. Way-Out Wednesday is the 70’s; it is time to fill up CHS with tie-dye. Next is Thriller Thursday, which takes CHS back in time to the 80’s. Last but not least is 90’s wear, on Fresh Prince Friday. Wish Will Smith could be here.

Time to Dance
Senators, it is that time of year again, and homecoming tickets will be sold in student finance before school, after school, at lunch, and at nutrition. Tickets sales begin Sept. 26. Monday through Wednesday tickets will be $5 with SBC and $7 without. On Thursday and Friday, tickets will be $7 with SBC and $10 without. At the door, tickets will be $15. Get them early! No bags, outside food or drinks will be allowed inside. Students must have both student ID card and ticket at the door.

Cow Plop for the Win
Win $250? CHS’ Future Farmers of America Chapter is holding its annual fundraiser to help members attend leadership conferences, the state convention, and the national convention. So buy a square, and wait for the cow to plop! Squares are 1 for $5 or 5 for $20, so be sure to buy one before the Homecoming Game on Sep. 30. Come by and see the cow during the second quarter of the game, and even if the cow does not choose a square, there is still a chance to win $75 in a random drawing. Like to gamble? Wednesday Night Live
It's back. Wednesday Night Live happens Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Enjoy the theme of the Wild West. Tickets are $5 at the door. Be there!

Greater Nevada Credit Union
GNCU is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Education Branch located inside CHS during the month of September! All Carson High School students are eligible to enter a drawing for a chance to win one of ten $25 gift cards; plus, all CHS students may also take advantage of a free $10 "Gift of Membership" to open a new account! Contest rules and entry forms are available at the GNCU Education Branch, so stop by any time during the month.

One Up
There's a new club at Carson High School, One Up, where students of all grades meet on Tuesdays after school. They are all about drug, alcohol, tobacco, and suicide prevention, and they volunteer and present to youth at different schools in Carson City. Additionally, they also attend events such as suicide walks, or national conferences. One Up club members are also trained in mental health, first aid, and suicide talk first aid. The club is very resourceful loves to help the community.

Carson High 2016-2017 Sports Registration
From the CHS Athletic Department, registration for 2016-2017 winter sports will be open September 26, and all athletes must register online at www.registermyathlete.com. Those who are already in a sport from this fall will need to select the winter sport; this is all the athlete needs to do. For new athletes this school year, they must go online and enter their information which includes the yearly health information, NIAA form B and physical, if they did not have one. Deadline to register is October 24. BONFIRE
Do not forget that the first night activity for homecoming week is the bonfire at the football practice field from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on September 26. Admission is free, but bring money for games and cans of food to donate to Food for Thought.

Senior Shirts
Tell Carson High School who you are. Senior shirts are now on sale! Pick up an order form at the student store! Shirts are $22 and sweatshirts are $30. All order forms are due to the student store by September 28th!

Student of the Week
Julia Cruz is a hard working sophomore. She is a bright shining light at CHS and stands out as such to everyone who meets her. She can always, always, be found with a smile on her face displaying positive leadership. Julia, thanks for all the hard work done for CHS. 

Senior Spotlight
This week’s senior in the spotlight is Elise Brady. Elise has maintained an impressive 4.8 GPA while taking many AP and Honors classes, and participating in her school and community. 

At school, Elise has been on the Varsity softball team since she was a freshman, where she is an outfielder. She has also played Varsity Tennis for the last three years and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and National Honor Society.

This summer Elise worked as a volunteer for the National Republican Party, registering voters and conducting surveys. She’s also a member of Silver Hills Community Church where she works the sound board during services, and teaches Sunday school to six through ten-year-olds. In her free time, Elise enjoys spending time with her family, scuba diving, movies, painting, playing the piano, and doing random math prolems that require deductive reasoning.

After the tennis season is over, she will be working as a tutor in Carson High School’s after school tutoring program, Solutions. While she plans to apply to various universities and colleges, Elise’s first choice is either Pepperdine or Emory University. She would like to major in Mathematics. The amazing counselors at CHS would like to thank Elise for the positive attitude and kindness she brings to Carson High School.
