As CHS teachers and students return to school, from, hopefully, a relaxing winter break, would it not be great to know one of their teachers recently published a short story? CHS Language Arts Department teacher Brigette Pugh is excited to share her latest published piece of writing.

RENO — Christmas week through New Year’s, Reno-Tahoe International Airport will see the highest passenger numbers since COVID significantly impacted air travel in March, and the airport will be working diligently to provide the safest, most sanitary travel experience possible.

CASA of Carson City received an early holiday gift from Casey Neilon, an accounting firm with offices in Reno and Carson City, in the form of a sizeable donation.

CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, provides quality court-appointed advocacy for abused and neglected children in child welfare cases, through a network of community volunteers who work with children to ensure their voices are heard during court proceedings.

The prevailing belief amongst leaders of nine nuclear powers is that Weapons of Mass Destruction are a deterrent. So far so good. However, there is also a belief simmering in the minds of a few revanchists, that WMDs might be useful in exacting retaliation or retribution for various grievances.

The teachers of Carson High School are continuing to ask if the community of Carson City would purchase a T-shirt to support both breast cancer awareness and CHS teacher Kelly Gustafson, who is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Being a student at Carson High School is rewarding enough, academically speaking, but learning is happening everywhere; however, forcing a teacher to dress in pink, from head to toe, wearing a pink tutu, is a different story and an exciting fundraising opportunity.

The Carson High School Retro-Homecoming and Respect Week went without a hitch, and the beauty of it was administrators, teachers, and staff had nothing whatsoever to do with making the decisions as the students chose both the candidates and the winners.

Gov. Steve Sisolak has recognized Thursday, Oct. 1 as “Vegas Strong Day in Nevada” and ordered Nevada State flags be flown at half-staff at all State public buildings in tribute to the victims of the October 1, 2017, shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas.

Kindness is on the agenda at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. Jimmy Gleich, from the Think Kindness organization will be the featured speaker on Tuesday, Sept. 22. The public is invited to attend. The organization’s mission is to inspire acts of kindness in schools and communities around the world.

Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell — who brought dignity to the office, the city and Nevada through his intelligence and kindness — died overnight at age 74. They wore pajamas, were wrapped in blankets, and carried cups of Dutch Bros and Starbucks as they gathered to celebrate the beginning of their senior year and the almost end of the soothing summer weather. The Class of 2020-2021, while practicing social distancing and wearing the latest fashion in face masks, gathered together at 6:00 a.m. Sept. 4 on the bleachers of the CHS football field to watch their sun rise.

UPDATE 6:23PM: On July 28, 2020 the Douglas County Library Director Amy Dodson and Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley met to discuss the Douglas County Public Library’s proposed statement of diversity. The library board was scheduled to discuss the statement at a public meeting scheduled for July 28, 2020. Sheriff Coverley submitted a written letter for public comment in opposition of the statement.

I've never had to worry about illnesses, because I've always known how I was going to die. I would step into an open manhole while out running and get swept out to sea, however that's not likely to happen because I'm no longer running. But it did happen to a Brazilian girl last week, and she lived to tell about it.

Yesterday while out for a walk, I ran into four middle school boys on skateboards and hailed them, "Okay, men, I know you've been out of school, but I've got a pop-quiz for you."

In the spirit of our summer mural wall, the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City has assembled a “Thank you” wall facing King Street and invites the community to come by with a Sharpie or paints and write a message to anyone who has helped during this time.

Is this pandemic over with yet? Nope! Not to beat a dead horse, but what is everyone doing with all this time off? For some, time off would be a fantastic development in their busy lives, and for others, time off would be an awful development because they are not able to pay their bills if they cannot go to work.

The point here is clear: Those who need time off cannot have it, and those who have time off do not want it. This is where hope, attitude, and contentment come into play. It is time for a laugh.

Dear Friends, I wanted to send my very best wishes to each of you for a peaceful and safe Spring Break. During the past three weeks, I have marveled at the professional services and selfless acts of kindness you have delivered during one of the most incredible events of my career.

If you know Shanell Cavener, then you are tremendously lucky. If you work with her, or she taught you, then the luck is multiplied tenfold (hopefully this is the right math to use, Shanell?).

Shanell Cavener is this year’s Carson High School Teacher of the Year, and she could not be more deserving of the honor. Shanell is quiet, often working behind the scenes in ways people would not even realize in order to benefit the lives of all who enter CHS.

Allow me to share a little positivity with Northern Nevada this morning.

We are a residential electrical service and maintenance company, and considered essential services. Yesterday, our HAPPYness representative, Jessica, had a client tell her how much he appreciated the normality our company is maintaining despite everything going on.

Our entire community has an awesome opportunity to shine through this and help others. Look for joy in the little things. They all add up to bigger things.

Feeding Pets of the Homeless welcomes DeBug Computer into its Donation Site community for pet food and supplies that will be delivered to local food banks, homeless shelters or homeless encampments. Donations may be taken to DeBug’s Carson City location at 1817 N. Stewart Street No. 30, or its Carson Valley location at 1560 U.S. Hwy 395 N. #C in Minden.

Ever spend some time watching high school students having fun? They do it so naturally. There is no lack of excitement happening at Carson High School, and one of the more amazing aspects of this high school is everyone is invited to attend every event.

The CHS, NJROTC Orienteers competed in a weekend long orienteering festival in Anza Borrego State Park, Calif., Jan. 17-18. During the festival, team members competed in three different races over the two days.

What the world needs now is a strong shared narrative that transcends politics, a strong shared narrative that transcends "us verses them" and guess what? That very thing is in the skunkworks. I can't tell you exactly what it is, for that would jinx the whole mission, but it's coming our way soon, perhaps by the end of January. Stay tuned to these pages.

Not only did the nonprofit organization Fellowship of Christian Athletes open their Christmas tree lot Nov. 24 to raise funds for their organization’s events and outreaches, they also supported other organizations and individuals by giving away 350 Angel Tree Christmas stockings and Christmas trees to Carson City children and families in need, and they also partnered with Sierra Lutheran High School to donate 75 trees to the US Marines at the Warfare Training Center in Coleville, Calif.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its Photo Finished 2020 exhibition at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 East Proctor Street in Carson City.

Last Saturday I was part of the Rotary Club's Shopping Spree. This annual event pairs a Rotarian with a needy child in hopes of purchasing gifts for the child and members of his/her family.

The young man that I accompanied was a rather precocious and talkative eight-year old who was a bit jaded when it came to acknowledging the magic of Christmas. However, during the shopping part of the activity, my new young friend became very animated and hopeful as he talked about selecting gifts for his family and for himself.

RENO — Reno-Tahoe International Airport anticipates more than 15,000 passengers will arrive and depart daily from the airport during the peak travel times leading up to Christmas and New Year's. The airport advises passengers to arrive early and allow time for parking, airline check-in and long TSA security lines.
