Memory care expert offers Carson City families, caregivers new directions in dementia treatment
It was a full house on Thursday evening in the Bristlecone room at Carson Tahoe Health in Carson City. The subject matter, dementia, affects many who care for aging family members. While the world is still searching for a cure, the good news is dementia research has hit record levels of funding and support in our country.
Hosted by Carson Tahoe Care Center, a new Prestige center opening soon in Carson City, David Troxel, MHP, an internationally recognized dementia expert and author, walked us through steps of what we can do to help provide a safe and caring environment for our loved ones living with dementia.
His expertise is rooted in the “Best Friends Approach,” focused on enhancing and enriching the lives of people affected by dementia by "lifting them up.”
Troxel spoke of creating an atmosphere where hugs are better than drugs and how a strong therapeutic environment delivers an interesting and active day with those with dementia.
Music, conversation, laughter, story telling, compliments, exercise, routines and purposeful chores — all of these activities and to encouraged to create a safe, secure and valued day so that things go better, he said.
Keeping active and fostering socialization are critical because boredom and loneliness is the enemy, Troxel said.
Today, Friday, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. (for health care professionals) and from 1 to 2 p.m., (for caregivers) join David Troxel, MHP, for a discussion about New Trends in Dementia Care. For more event information and to RSVP, please call (775) 400-6811.
