The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Carson City Mayor Lori Bagwell. With the new year, a new set of laws is once again taking effect.

The DMV is continuing to find new ways to serve the public while operating under COVID-19 safety protocols.

CARSON CITY — Nevada motorists who have been unable to make an appointment at DMV offices before their expiration date will benefit from two new initiatives announced by the Department of Motor Vehicles on Tuesday.

Laws implementing a wide range of criminal justice reforms, establishing a state board responsible for regulating marijuana and creating a payday loan database finally take effect Wednesday, more than a year after the 2019 legislative session ended.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles offices will be open normal hours on Tuesday, June 23, after a fiber optic cable cut by a private contractor caused outages for the DMV and many other state agencies on June 22.

CARSON CITY – The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles today temporarily suspended all non-commercial driving skills tests statewide after one drive examiner in Las Vegas contracted coronavirus.

“We’re taking this brief pause to re-evaluate our protocols. Even though our examiners have been wearing personal protective equipment, the driver and the examiner sit in close proximity during a test. We must continue to put the safety of the public and our employees first,” said DMV Director Julie Butler.

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles reopened its branch offices in the Silver State including Carson City and Reno, which saw brisk business Monday.

CARSON CITY — Beginning Monday, June 15, 2020, the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles will reopen all branch offices in the Silver State.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles is preparing to reopen after shutting down on March 16, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a reopening date has not been set. All full-service DMV offices remain closed.

Nevada is trying to conduct its June 9 primary election almost entirely by mail as a way to prevent the spread of COVID-19, with limited options to vote in person. Wayne Thorley, deputy secretary of state for elections, took questions from the public in a Facebook Live town hall on May 11.

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, along with many other government agencies, will remain closed under the Phase I reopening announced by Governor Sisolak on May 7.

Quad-County Emergency Operations Center (Quad EOC) is reporting four new positive cases and five additional recoveries of COVID-19 in the Quad-County region. This brings the total number of cases to 108, with 63 recoveries and one death, 44 cases remain active.

The new cases are:

A male Douglas County resident in his 20’s
A male Carson City resident in his 30’s
A male Carson City resident in his 50’s
A male Carson City resident in his 40’s

Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske announces that county election officials have begun to mail out 2020 primary election ballots and that voters can expect to receive their ballot in the mail in the next two weeks.

Voters in some counties may even begin to receive their ballots in the mail as early as May 1. Secretary Cegavske previously announced that the 2020 primary election would be a vote-by-mail election due to health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stimulus Program Information

The coronavirus relief bill passed March 27 by Congress provides payments to individuals who make less than $100,000 a year. The payment total $1,200 for each adult who makes $75,000 or less, plus $500 per child. The payment amounts decrease if you make between $75,000 and $99,000. The income is determined by your latest tax return filed with the IRS. It will use your 2019 taxes if you have filed them already, or your 2018 taxes if you haven't. CARSON CITY — In an effort to bring relief to Nevada motorists affected by the closures related to COVID-19, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak and the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles have issued an automatic 90-day extension for expiring driver’s licenses, vehicle registrations and other DMV documents. Governor Sisolak signed a Declaration of Emergency authorizing the extension March 20.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles is aware of the many issues the closure of our offices is having on the motoring public. We are currently evaluating ways to provide relief. There are both legal and technical issues to resolve. We will announce specific measures as soon as possible.

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles has closed its field offices statewide and many of the centralized services in Carson City, including the call center, effective 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 17. The department has taken the action to help mitigate the possible spread of COVID-19 among state employees, their families, and the general public.

More springlike weather around the capital city is ahead Ash Wednesday with a daytime high near 65. Events include a Real ID town hall meeting at the Carson City DMV, the economic impact of pro soccer in Northern Nevada will be featured at NNDA's Business Edge at Casino Fandango, Carson City Schools offers the first of three pre-kindergarten programs for parents and will also host a separate strategic plan meeting. Meanwhile, Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness hosts a yoga class, plus Salsa dancing at Yaple's Ballroom, country and pop dancing at Carson Lanes, a safety workshop for women and more.

Carson City Supervisor Lori Bagwell, local Hookah Lounge business owner Nathaniel Killgore and resident Aaron Sims have all thrown their hats in the ring for the position of Carson City Mayor. Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell is not seeking reelection after 11 years.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles will hold town hall meetings at four DMV offices across the state on Wednesday, Feb. 26, to help residents learn about Real ID requirements for travelers that will go into effect this fall.

The Alzheimer’s Association hosted Dementia Conversations at the Carson City Library on Dec. 11, 2019. This event was held to address areas of concern expressed by dementia caregivers and professionals who attended the Carson City Alzheimer’s Community Forum earlier this year.

The Nevada Commission for Women unveiled a limited edition license plate celebrating women’s suffrage as a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote.

The plate itself is historic to Nevada, as it was the first assembly bill, Assembly Bill 499, to be backed by only women. Bills need a majority vote to pass any legislation, and this session was the first session any state in the country saw a legislature with a female-led majority.

CARSON CITY — The Department of Motor Vehicles will implement a bill from the 2019 Nevada Legislature that requires motorists to submit their odometer readings when they register or renew their vehicles.

YERINGTON — Lyon County Code Enforcement held a meeting last week to address the problem of illegal dumping countywide. The Illegal Dumping Work Group, which represents a number of agencies and nonprofit organizations, will meet on a quarterly basis to continue collaboration and cooperation in its efforts to clean up areas where illegal dumping frequently happens.

CARSON CITY – The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles is warning motorists about a speeding ticket scam that has surfaced in the Silver State.

Hackers are sending out emails, purportedly from the DMV, about alleged traffic violations that can only be paid online with a credit card.

The emails demand payment of a fine within 72 hours and contain links for “EasyPay” or to contest the citation.

The Nevada DMV does not issue traffic citations or collect fines, according to Director Julie Butler.
