Nevada Builders Alliance, Friends of Sutro Tunnel partner for Dayton barbecue at tunnel

Event Date:
September 12, 2024 - 2:00pm

Nevada Builders Alliance, the state’s largest construction and building trade association, and Friends of Sutro Tunnel Charity, a non-profit focused on preserving and restoring the historic site in Dayton will hold their second ‘Meat and Drink’ event hosted at the Sutro Tunnel.

Happening Thursday, Sept. 12 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., the event will feature food, Frey Ranch whiskey tastings, music, chipping contests and tours of the Sutro Tunnel site. Tickets for the event are $100 and are available now online here.

“We are excited to continue our partnership with the Sutro Tunnel to host our annual barbecue and raise awareness for such a monumental historic location,” said Glen Martel, CEO of Nevada Builders Alliance. “Over the past year, our members have been involved in this project and we can’t wait to unveil the progress we’ve helped accomplish. We invite the community to join the celebration and explore this piece of history for themselves.”

This collaboration event will allow the public to see the updates made since 2023 and the progress inside the tunnel by Simerson Construction, all while enjoying live music from Carson Chandler and entertainment by master of ceremonies John Cassinelli.

There will be self-guided tours around Sutro, as well as a chipping contest in the newly refurbished pond hosted by Transamerica. The event will feature a barbecue dinner catered by Carson City BBQ, the Nevada Builders Foundation serving a Karma Sutro Pale Ale by the Fox Brewery from their beer truck and Frey Ranch Whiskey tastings inside the tunnel. Guests will have the option to take a shuttle from Bank Saloon, available at 1:30 p.m. and 2:35 p.m.

"We are thrilled to collaborate again with Nevada Builders Alliance to celebrate and bring attention to Sutro Tunnel, a historic landmark in our community," said Rob McFadden, Friends of Sutro Tunnel Charity board member. "This event offers a unique opportunity for people to delve into Nevada's rich history by exploring historic buildings, enjoying delicious food and getting a glimpse into the progress we’ve made over the last year. Thanks to a generous donation from the Nevada Builders Foundation, we hope to highlight the tunnel's significant role in mining history and inspire others to join our mission to restore and preserve this site for future generations."

The Friends of Sutro Tunnel Charity is a nonprofit organization founded in 2020 with the mission to preserve and protect the historical significance of the Sutro Tunnel and Site for local community members, visitors and future generations.

The project is completely funded by donations, tours and special events. Located in Dayton, Nev., visitors can take a tour to see the original warehouse, tunnel portal, candle house, wood shop, carriage house, Victorian, mule barn, and the recently restored machine shop museum. To schedule a tour, donate to the project or volunteer with Friends of Sutro Tunnel Charity, visit www.thesutrotunnel.org.

This event is made possible by generous sponsors and partners, including the Nevada Builders Foundation, Nevada Fence, Transamerica, Carson City BBQ, Bank Saloon and Frey Ranch Distillery. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. To donate or become a sponsor, email membership@nevadabuilders.org.
