Swearing in ceremony held for four members of Carson City Sheriff's Office
A swearing in ceremony was held Thursday afternoon at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office promoting two current law enforcement officers, welcoming one new Deputy Sheriff and a Reserve Deputy Sheriff.
The ceremony began with a moment of silence for Deputy Carl Howell who was killed three years ago yesterday in the line of duty while responding to a domestic violence call.
Sgt. James Primka was promoted to the position of Lieutenant after the retirement of Capt. Jeff Melvin.
He began working with the Sheriff’s Office as a Reserve Deputy in 1994, and was hired as a deputy in 1996 working in the detention division. In 1997, he moved to patrol division, and then on to the detectives division in 2000.
In 2003, he was promoted to Sergeant and became the Watch Commander for the patrol division. In 2014, he was also assigned SWAT Commander.
— Deputy Salvador “Sal” Acosta has been with the Sheriff’s Office since 2003, and has worked in the Investigations Division. He has now been promoted to the position of Sergeant.
He just sent his children off to college last week, and they surprised him by attending the pinning and swearing in ceremony in support of their father.
— Joining the ranks of Sheriff’s Deputies is Benjamin Stryffeler, who became a Carson City Sheriff Uniformed Reserve member in August of 2017.
He is a retired Master Sergeant and Infantry Operations Chief and received an award while serving as a platoon sergeant in Afghanistan. He was originally sworn in as a Reserve Deputy in August 2010.
Stryffeler retired last Friday after 22 years, after graduating from Carson High School in 1996 and heading to bootcamp the next day.
According to the award, “Stryffeler led his Marines during several fierce small-arms engagements, exposed himself to hostile fire to ensure the safety of his Marines and conducted four casualty evacuations for Marines and Afghans, helping to provide lifesaving aid to his wounded.”
— Promoted from volunteer to Reserve Deputy Sheriff is Christopher Wolken, who graduated from Reed High School in 2010, studied business management at Western Nevada College, and is now a Junior Varsity Football Coach and Reed High School.
