Panel on Saturday to highlight opportunities For Dayton area employers

The Dayton Chamber of Commerce, Lyon Human Services, JOIN Inc, and Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties are partnering to sponsor a panel presentation for area employers this Saturday, August 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Greater Nevada Credit Union in Dayton.

Panelists will describe various financial incentives for employers to hire disabled Veterans, youths, recipients of Social Security, etc. Topics include the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC), Lyon County Employment Partnership and its career enhancement referral system, Comstock Youth Works, JOIN, and other programs.

WOTC, for example, rewards employers who hire eager-to-work individuals who may nevertheless have a hard time securing employment, such as disabled Veterans, recipients of Supplemental Security Income or Social Security, etc. Through the WOTC program, employers who hire people from such target groups can earn a significant tax credit. The process is simple with minimal paperwork on the employer's part. Employers decide who to hire and can receive the tax savings on an unlimited number of employees hired under the program.

Lyon County Employment Partnership is another program that can benefit employers by increasing in-demand job skills in the local workforce. The program focuses on identifying job-seekers’ strengths, and builds on skills in resume development, good work habits, professionalism, organizational skills, etc. Referrals for career enhancement through Job Connect, Vocational Rehabilitation, Disabled Veterans Outreach Program, etc. and support in navigating the ever-changing world of employment are integral parts of the program.

JOIN Inc, which prides itself on helping to prepare individuals for career opportunities that result in lasting employment, works collaboratively with many State of Nevada agencies, school districts, colleges, apprenticeship programs and private contractors to produce trained, motivated, and work-ready employees. They also help connect employers with job-seekers who have completed certified training and are prepared with interview and communication skills, a strong commitment to work a required schedule, and a passion for a particular occupation. Panelists will describe some JOIN programs, including their Young Adult Work Experience Program.

Yet another opportunity for area employers is available through Healthy Communities Coalition’s Comstock Youth Works program. Teen interns learn on the job and work hard for employers in the Dayton, Mound House, Yerington, Silver Springs, and Fernley regions who give them a chance as summer interns. CYW covers the teen's hourly wage, workers comp, and liability insurance.

The Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce is located inside the Greater Nevada Credit Union building. The Chamber promotes local businesses and civic organizations/non-profits through various services.
