Western Nevada College, UNR Extension receive $982K in federal grants to improve distance learning

CARSON CITY — Western Nevada College and the University of Nevada Reno Extension are among recent federal grant recipients to receive financial packages to make distance learning upgrades and aid in the expansion of educational services in 14 rural counties.

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey’s June public meeting takes place on Thursday, June 14 at 9am at the Lahontan Room of the Silver Springs Community Center, 2945 Ft Churchill St, Silver Springs, NV 89429.

Guest speakers at this month’s breakfast meeting include Rita Greggio and Allison Cladianos who will describe their program, the Northern Nevada Alliance for Health and Justice, a medical legal partnership between Northern Nevada HOPES and Washoe Legal Services. The program is based at HOPES and is available to assist patients of HOPES with civil legal problems.

State Senate GOP Leaders Support Medicaid Expansion

CARSON CITY – State Senate Republican leaders today commended GOP Gov. Brian Sandoval’s decision to expand the state Medicaid program as a commitment to the health of all Nevadans and a boost for a critical sector of the state’s economy.

“Ensuring that poor Nevadans have access to primary health care through Medicaid is very simply the right thing to do, both for our citizens and our economy,” said Sen. Michael Roberson, R-Henderson. “It will reduce our rate of uninsured and provide individuals with greater economic security.”

Sandoval Announces Intent To Expand Medicaid

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval today announced he will include 78,000 additional people in Nevada’s Medicaid program as provided for under the federal Affordable Care Act.

“Though I have never liked the Affordable Care Act because of the individual mandate it places on citizens, the increased burden on businesses and concerns about access to health care, the law has been upheld by the Supreme Court,” he said in a statement. “As such, I am forced to accept it as today’s reality and I have decided to expand Nevada’s Medicaid coverage.

Marilyn Wills has been named director of the Office of Consumer Health Assistance by Mike Willden, director of the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

Deep cuts to state budget would hurt agencies and services

Dozens of Nevada’s nonprofit groups, service providers and others met this week in Reno and Las Vegas to consider the looming threat of deep cuts to the state budget cuts which threaten to eliminate or dramatically reduce health care, education, and human services.

Service agency and nonprofit directors from Lyon and Storey counties attended the Monday meeting, hoping for insights on how to plan for the upcoming deep cuts to Nevada’s public education, health and social services that will hit the rural areas especially hard.
