Carson City arrests: Man jailed for alleged theft of electric bicycle
A 36-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for alleged felony possession of stolen property after he was found riding an electric bicycle that was reported stolen Monday, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office report.
Richard Rodriguez Rios of Carson City was taken into custody at 9:32 a.m. following an investigation. According to the arrest report, a deputy in the area of East Nye Lane saw a man on a white bicycle facing north at the intersection of Tenaya Drive and East Nye Lane. The bicycle matched the description of an electric bicycle that was reported stolen on July 25.
The deputy conducted a subject stop on the male, who did not stop right away on the bicycle. The final stop was at the intersection of Tenaya Drive and Ediza Circle. The man identified himself as Rios, the arrest report states.
The officer informed Rios the reason for the stop and that the bicycle he was on matched the description of a bicycle reported stolen, the arrest report states. Rios told the deputy the bicycle was not his and that he was giving it a test ride because a person (who he provided a first name) was selling it to him.
The deputy told Rios that he watched him try to get away as soon as he saw him. The deputy asked the suspect where the person was who was to sell him the bicycle. Rios would not provide any information about the man's last name. Rios insisted the officer check his phone.
The officer saw a conservation between Rios and another person via social media, but it was about borrowing money and not in regards to the bicycle, the report states.
Officers contacted the victim of the stolen bicycle, who confirmed it was theirs. Rios was taken into custody for suspicion of possession of stolen property. He was read his Miranda warning and agreed to speak. He told the deputy he was test riding the bicycle because he can't drive a motor vehicle. He said he was planning to purchase the bike for $200 and stated he did not want to provide any further information.
The owner of the bike agreed to have have deputies take it to the crime lab at the sheriff's office so fingerprints could be taken. The bicycle was then released back to the victim. Bail: $10,000.
