Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada score with Tice-Pegram Carson Valley partnership
Mike Tice, offensive line coach for the Oakland Raiders football team brought his A-game to his 7th annual charity golf tournament weekend in June featuring the entire Raiders coaching staff, including head coach Jack Del Rio and a spate of former NFL players from around the country. The event doubled its take this year, including a match from Carson Valley Inn owner, Mike Pegram to over $300,000.
As is the custom for this event, half of the sum was earmarked for a free-standing clubhouse in the Carson Valley, with the other half dedicated to the site’s overall operating costs, which runs about $300,000 per year.
“The funds we raise at this event help us get half way to our full operating costs and the remaining funds are donated by community members and private local foundations,” Katie Leao, chief professional officer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, said. “The Carson Valley Club is 100 percent funded locally, which says a lot about the community that supports our programs and youth.”
Each year, Tice and Pegram team up to provide a fun event for the Raiders’ coaching staff and invited guests to encourage fundraising efforts. As a major event sponsor, Carson Valley Inn supplies hotel rooms, meals, transportation and entertainment for event-goers and they donate to the Club throughout the weekend.
“This annual event comes from Mike Pegram’s desire to see a clubhouse built in the Valley and Coach Tice’s passion for the kids,” Leao said. “Their generosity goes above and beyond and we are thrilled to be able begin our search for an appropriate site.”
Tice, in cooperation with Under Armour, provides a brand-new pair of athletic shoes each year for members of the Carson Valley clubhouse, currently housed at Pau Wa Lu Middle School. This year, the shoes were provided by Raiders guard, Kelechi Osemele.
In addition to the charity event this year, Raiders coaches Del Rio, Tice, Todd Downing, Bernie Parmalee, John Pagano, Nate Tice and Rob Moore introduced a football clinic for Club members.
“Coach Tice and Mike Pegram have been a blessing for the youth in our community and a huge part of establishing our building fund,” Leao said. “The Carson Valley Community Council of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada have formed a committee to begin identifying possible sites in which to build.”
The Club serves more than 340 kids in the Valley and is rapidly outgrowing its current location. Leao said the Club is seeking to raise enough money to support operating costs for a building of their own in Carson Valley and is planning its first major fundraising event to take place Oct. 1.
“Our Fall Affair will be a dinner event featuring celebrity chef Clint Jolly of CHOPPED: Restaurant Impossible and chefs Josh and Whitney Deri of Blend Catering,” Leao said. “We expect it to be a wonderful event and are excited to bring our community together to help us give our kids a place of their own.”
Tickets for the event will be available on the Club’s website, www.bgcwn.org, beginning in August, Leao said.
Community information meetings will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 2 at 5:30 p.m. and Thursday, Aug. 3 at noon at Carson Valley Accounting, 1663 US 395, Suite 201, in Minden to discuss the Club’s plan for expansion in the Valley. The public is encouraged to attend.
