There is a wildland fire burning this afternoon near Kyburz on the West Slope of El Dorado County and 22 miles west of South Lake Tahoe. Highway 50 is closed in both directions.
Voluntary evacuations are being done between Kyburz and Strawberry.
The initial report of a fire came in about at 1:58 p.m. Crews are on the scene working to extinguish the blaze, which is burning on both sides of the highway, officials said. California Highway Patrol is turning around eastbound traffic at Pollock Pines and westbound traffic at Meyers.
The fire is north of the American River on both sides of Highway 50. Fire is burning north toward the 2013 Kyburz fire area. Highway 50 is closed east of Sly Park road and west of Meyers. Structures are threatened.
The Super Scooper, a Bombardier CL415 firefighting aircraft now at the Lake Tahoe Airport, has been called out from South Lake Tahoe. It carried 1,600 gallons of water from the lake to douse the front end of the fire.
The cause was a car fire east of Icehouse Road which caused surrounding vegetation to catch on fire. Go to South Tahoe Now for updates to this developing story. You can also get information from the InciWeb here.
