Weather Service: Gusty winds, thunderstorms possible in Douglas, southern Lyon County
Scattered thunderstorms with the potential of heavy rainfall and localized flooding are possible Saturday afternoon and early evening, mostly south of Highway 50 into Douglas and south Lyon counties, according to the National Weather Service.
Afternoon heating and mid-level moisture may trigger afternoon thunderstorms with the best probabilities happening across the eastern Sierra south of US-50.
Shower and thunderstorm coverage north of US-50 may be somewhat bit of a drier environment that could be more prone to strong and gusty outflow winds, forecasters note, with strong outflow winds in excess of 60 mph which could result in areas of reduced visibility in blowing dust if these outflows move across desert sinks and dry lake beds, forecasters said.
As moisture infiltrates farther northward on Sunday, storm chances will increase across the Sierra Front into portions of Eastern Modoc County in California and far northern Washoe County. These storms could produce lightning. The threat of isolated dry lightning strikes and new fire ignitions will remain present through Sunday, NWS forecasters said.
Meanwhile, another heatwave is expected in the region over the next several days bringing above average heat with triple digits highs across western Nevada valleys looks to persist through the middle of next week before temperatures cool back toward season normals, forecasters said.
