Inaugural Kaboom-Con comic convention happening today at Carson City Community Center
On Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, the first annual Kaboom-Con comic convention will be making its debut at the Carson City Community Center beginning at 10 a.m.
This all-day event is the first of its kind, bringing together cosplay (costume play), rare comic books, industry professionals, live music and so much more.
Comic Cons are popular throughout the nation — and the world — and organizer Mark Helton said he wanted to bring that same energy to the capital city.
“Kaboom-Con was born out of a love for all things pop culture and the belief that Carson City deserved a high-energy, inclusive space for fans to celebrate what they love,” Helton said. “We wanted to create an explosion of creativity where every panel, cosplay, and conversation leaves a lasting impact.”
Helton said attendees can expect “the unexpected,” including “jaw-dropping cosplay contests,” meeting their favorite creators, hunting for rare comics, “epic fandom debates,” or just “soaking in the geeky goodness!”
According to Helton, Kaboom-Con is more than just a convention — it's a community-builder.
“It brings together local businesses, creators, and fans, boosting the local economy and fostering a sense of pride and belonging,” Helton said. “It’s a win-win for everyone involved.”
Helton said that the con is also giving back by donating 25 percent of all net proceeds to two local non-profits: Cold Nose Rescue & Sanctuary and KNVC 95.1 FM.
This will only be the first of many cons, Helton said.
“This is just the beginning, Kaboom-Con is here to stay, and we plan to make it an annual celebration that grows bigger and better each year.” Helton said. “Carson City's ultimate fan experience will now be a yearly tradition!”
Don’t consider yourself a geek or a nerd? It doesn’t matter.
“We want everyone to know that Kaboom-Con is for you,” Helton said. “Whether you're a seasoned fan or just con-curious, come as you are and be part of something extraordinary. Together, we’ll make some unforgettable memories.”
Helton said after the events end, there is also the “Kaboom-Krawl” happening immediately after the con, with many popular bars & restaurants participating up and down the Carson Street corridor.
Tickets for Kaboom-Con are $10 for ages 10 and over, and free for kids under 10.
