Local vibes: KNVC establishes broadcasting station at 95.1 FM in Carson City
With a dedicated mission to engage, inform and entertain a regional audience, KNVC community radio is broadcasting at 95.1 FM in Carson City, bringing a wide range of local tastes in music that reach the ears of listeners south into Douglas County and north through Washoe Valley.
Using contributions from neighboring stations KDUP, Open Sky Radio and with FCC licensing through the Brewery Arts Center, the new station aims to grow its active listening audience in a short amount of time.
From indie rock to jazz and classic R&B, folk and alt-country to Americana, those who are music lovers will be pleased at artist lineups on KNVC that represent multiple genres. There's no other local radio station that will play Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, Leonard Bernstein, Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong in the space of an hour.
General Manager Joe McCarthy explained the wide variety of music 95.1 FM provides.
"There is going to be lots of different styles of music, from hip-hop to classical each and everyday," McCarthy said. "We also want to highlight the overlooked content that some of these great artists provided, not just the hits that made them famous."
Volunteers will soon be able to contribute inside and outside of the operation. A broadcasting studio is part of the plan that will focus on media production and live, on-air radio with the idea to have fresh community news, interviews and information programming to go along with music.
According to KNVC’s website, the plan is to originate around the clock broadcasting operations from Carson City this year with the aim of reflecting community diversity. The goal is also to provide an outlet for individuals, groups, issues and music that have been overlooked by other forms of media, setting them apart from other radio stations.
McCarthy also spoke about the bright future of the local broadcasting program.
“We are currently working on a complete program grid, which heavily focuses on community engagement and small staff members,” McCarthy said. “We want to establish a program that enriches people with information in a respectful manner that doesn’t alienate anyone or any subject, that remains a primary goal for myself and (program director) Brian Bahouth.”
Although 95.1 strives to bring a community together, help is much needed in many aspects of the program.
This is not your father’s NPR, this is Carson City public radio that both McCarthy and Program Director Bahouth strive to build, funding the operation out of their pockets and volunteering their time and effort. For this reason, donations, underwriters, and volunteers will go a long way toward the improvement and stability of the station and media landscape in Carson City, Washoe Valley and Douglas County.

Roles such as: music volunteers, news volunteers, and general volunteers will benefit the community radio station, as these jobs require some form of training and skill. According to the website, an on-air KNVC music dj must attend a five hour training class, held quarterly and pass a solo on-air test, and then you can inhabit a place on the KNVC program grid.
For a news volunteer, training is needs-based, collaborative or individual, rather than programmatic. If interested, contact Brian at volunteer@knvc.org, for more information on the volunteer roles go here.
The project as a whole is still a work in progress, but KNVC has made many steps in the right direction toward a community radio broadcast that features all kinds of unique music, said McCarthy.
