Carson City area road report for week of July 4-10

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of July 4-10, 2016. Work will continue on the Downtown Corridor improvement project on Carson Street. The following streets will be impacted:

— Carson Street will remain one lane in each direction.
— Ann and Caroline will be closed to the east to Plaza.
— Spear, Proctor, Telegraph and 2nd will be closed to the west to Curry.
— Downtown and Third Street Businesses are Open During Construction.

Lane closures with flagger controlled traffic at the following locations due to utility/road work from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.:
— Center Drive south of Clear Creek Avenue near Topsy Lane, Tuesday-Friday
— Roads along Oak ridge Drive, Monday-Thursday
— N. Ormsby Blvd between Winnie Lane and College Parkway, Tuesday-Friday

One northbound lane of Carson Street will be closed from Fairview Drive to Stewart Street Tuesday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Road closures expected at the following locations due to utility/road work. Please follow detours:
— Topsy Lane between Center Drive and U.S. 395, Monday-Sunday, for all hours, local traffic only
— Race Track Road and Bigelow Drive south of Snyder Avenue, Monday-Sunday, for all hours, local traffic only
— Jeanell Drive between Russett Way and Michael Drive, Tuesday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
— Anderson Street between Robinson and Caroline Streets Tuesday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
— E. Fifth Street loop around the Korean War Memorial, Monday-Sunday, for all hours

Shoulder work will occur on the east side of Chaise Drive just south of the intersection with Cabrolet Drive Tuesday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Northbound U.S. 395 between Clear Creek Avenue and Snyder Avenue will be reduced from three to two lanes until July 8, excluding the holiday weekend.

Extended paving sessions, on I-580 in Washoe Valley, are scheduled through the next few weekends and for weekend hours to avoid impacting weekday commute travel.

State Route 89 (Placer County) from Sugar Pine Road to Ward Creek and from Pine Avenue to to Cathedral Drive: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday and 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday through Friday for roadway excavation and drainage work.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $13 million water quality improvement project from Cascade Road to just north of the Eagle Falls Viaduct over Emerald Bay. The project is constructing new drainage facilities to treat stormwater runoff and repaving a four-mile section of the highway. Completion is expected in summer 2017.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from Cascade Road to Eagle Point Campground: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 2 a.m. to noon Wednesday and Thursday and 2 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday for drainage work and shoulder excavation.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $25 million project from the "Y" junction with U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe to Cascade Road, north of Camp Richardson. Curb, gutter and sidewalks will be added in the 1.1-mile four-lane section, and the highway will be widened in the two-lane section to Visitor Center Road to provide 4-foot paved shoulders on each side. Drainage systems are also being built and the roadway is being resurfaced. Completion is expected this fall.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from 12th Street to West Way: Northbound and southbound motorists can expect the No. 2 lane and shoulder closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Thursday for curb, gutter and sidewalk work. Motorists also can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from the Tahoe Visitors Center to Cascade Road from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday through Friday for pavement work.

State Route 28 (Placer County): Work continues on Placer County’s $50 million Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project from State Route 267 to Chipmunk Street. Highway work includes installing curb and gutter, sidewalks, roundabouts, lighting and drainage systems to enhance pedestrian and bicycle mobility, improve safety and provide water-quality improvements.

State Route 28 (Placer County) from Beach Avenue to Deer Street: Westbound motorists can expect shoulder closures from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Tuesday through Friday for utility work. Eastbound motorists can expect shoulder closures from Fox Street to Beaver Street from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to noon Friday for utility work.

State Route 28 (Placer County) from Agatam Avenue to Burton Creek Drive: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday for grinding and paving work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from at Schnell School Road in Placerville: Westbound motorists can expect the #2 lane closed from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Thursday and eastbound motorists can expect the #2 lane closed from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday through Friday for bridge work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) at Upper Truckee River/Elks Club Drive: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday for bridge work.

U.S. Highway 50 - Eastbound (El Dorado County) from 4th Street to 2nd Street: Motorists can expect overnight median and left lane closures from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Wednesday through Friday morning for utility work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Truckee Drive to River Drive and from Trout Creek to Tulare Avenue in South Lake Tahoe: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect lane restrictions around the clock from 9 p.m. Tuesday to 5 p.m. Friday for gas line relocation work. Closures may be picked up earlier on Friday depending on traffic.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from 12th Street to Pope Beach Road: Motorists can expect right lane and shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday for curb/gutter/sidewalk work.

State Route 193 (El Dorado County) at Rock Creek Road: Motorists can expect long-term signalized one-way traffic control for emergency repair work, which is scheduled to be completed in July.

State Route 193 (El Dorado County) at the South Fork American River/Chili Bar: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday for bridge work.

State Route 267 (Placer County) from Northstar Drive to Brockway Summit: Motorists can expect intermittent one-way traffic control at various locations around the clock from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 7 p.m. Friday for utility work.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) from Brace Road to Magra Road: Work continues on a $36 million project to increase the vertical clearance of nine bridge structures in south Placer County to 16 feet, 6 inches. The vertical clearance will be increased on seven structures by lifting the existing bridge deck and the other two will have the roadway below dug down.

State Route 49 (Nevada County) from Highway 20 junction to South Fork Yuba River Bridge: Motorists can expect alternating lane, shoulder and median closures from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday July 6-8 for guardrail work.

State Route 49 (Sierra County) from Goodyear Creek Road to Yuba Pass Summit: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls for right lane closures from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday July 5-7 for miscellaneous work.

State Route 49 (Sierra County) from Battelle Street to Plumas County Line: Motorists can expect one way traffic controls for a moving closure 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday July 5-7 for maintenance operations.

Interstate 80 – Westbound (Nevada County) from Sierra County line to Farad undercrossing: Motorists can expect right lane and shoulder closures from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Thursday July 6 & 7 for ditch cleaning.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) at the Roseville Parkway overhead (between Taylor Road and Galleria Boulevard): Motorists can expect overnight lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday evening through 7 a.m. Saturday July 9 for bridge work.

Interstate 80 (Placer County) at the connector ramps to/from Highway 65: Motorists can expect alternating full ramp closures from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Tuesday night July 5 through 5 a.m. Friday July 8 for paving operations.

State Route 193 (Placer County) from Fowler Road to Rainbow Valley Lane: Motorists can expect around the clock one way traffic control and right shoulder restrictions from 6 a.m. to 5:59 a.m. beginning Wednesday July 6 through 6 a.m. Friday July 8 for highway construction.

Lane closures and travel delays will begin Wednesday, Nov. 13 on U.S. 95 Alternate in Yerington as the Nevada Department of Transportation makes roadway drainage improvements.

UPDATE: Due to increased fire weather conditions, NV Energy has upgraded a Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) Watch to Warning status in Genoa, southwestern Carson City and Virginia City Highlands in northern Nevada for today, Nov. 13 and into tomorrow morning.
A PSOM warning means a de-energization is likely to prevent the possibility of sparking a wildfire.

A storm expected to move into the region Wednesday has prompted NV Energy to issue a Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) warning for southwest Carson City to Genoa and the Virginia City Highlands.

With the passing of Chef Charlie Abowd, Saturday, the food drive he and Steve Funk, KNVC 95.1 FM Radio's general manager, kicked off Nov. 9, has been renamed the KNVC and Chef Charlie Abowd Memorial Turkey Drop Food Drive. The event will take place annually.

UPDATE: NV Energy has de-activated approximately 5,500 electricity customers in Washoe County in the area of the fire at Callahan Ranch.

NV Energy reports 2,636 customers without power Monday morning in Carson City. The outage was reported at 9:46 a.m. At this time there is not an estimated time of restoration. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE 5PM: Fire crews will be mopping up the Callahan Fire overnight and into tomorrow. One primary residential structure was lost along with multiple outbuildings. The cause is under investigation at this time. Some fire evacuations remain in place at Callahan Rd and Fawn Lane as crews mop up hot spots. See Perimetermap.com here for evacuation updates.

UPDATE 12:55PM: The fire is estimated at approximately 100 acres; approximately 3,000 people have been impacted by evacuations. Rain is falling on the fire scene. Additional Strike Teams totaling 10-15 engines have begun arriving to assist on the fire, according to Eastern Sierra Fire and Ice, which tracks fires in the region.

Just before 11 a.m. on Monday, the Washoe County Alert system sent out an evacuation notice to residents in the Callahan Ranch area stating they should evacuate immediately.

The evacuation point is at South Valleys Library located at 15650A Wedge Pkwy, Reno.

Dayton Elementary students were treated Friday to a helicopter fly-in by the Nevada National Guard as part of the school's Veterans Day program.

A team from Nevada National Guard landed a helicopter on the soccer field after the school's Veterans Day assembly. Dayton Elementary is the only school in Lyon County that is a Purple Star School.

Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11 and is a federal holiday to honor all veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. A number of events are planned in Carson City and surrounding counties.

Charle Abowd, a world renowned, award-winning chef and restaurateur but even more than that a philanthropist and community fixture for decades, died Saturday evening, according to longtime friends.

Abowd, 73, was a pioneer in farm to table dining, along with his wife Karen who co-owned Cafe at Adele's, he was a champion and supporter of music and the arts. He was a man who dedicated himself to lifting up others.
