Boys and Girls Clubs hosts William N. Pennington Teen Center grand opening Thursday
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada will celebrate the ribbon cutting and grand opening of its William N. Pennington Teen Center Thursday at 10 a.m. The community is invited.
Funded by a $1.2 million naming gift from the William N. Pennington Foundation of Reno and donations from the Carson City community, the club broke ground on the Teen Center in October 2015.
“The Teen Center was designed for teens by teens,” said Matt Sampson, Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada program director. “Our teen leadership team interviewed three architectural firms and visited several like sites in Reno and Sparks.”
Sampson said the teen group fell in love with a facility at Hug High School, built in a renovated metal shop.
The Carson City Teen Center’s construction tells the story of how the building is put together, said Jeremy Kunter, project manager for Shaheen Beauchamp Builders, pointing out rebar coming through cement walls, and fabrication marks on steel beams throughout the building.
“This was a great project, a lot of fun,” Kunter said. “We had to wrap our heads around leaving everything open where you can see the bones and not ‘making it pretty’ because the kids wanted that garage hang-out feel.”
The Center includes art and technology rooms featuring green screen and video editing capabilities, video game room, café tables, foosball and pool tables, and bleachers equipped with electrical outlets for mobile device charging. The bleachers were designed and built in-house by Shaheen Beauchamp employees.
“I remember sitting on the bleachers as a student at Eagle Valley Junior High,” Kunter said. “The bleachers are where the magic happens.”
The grand opening program will feature multi-media presentation featuring Autumn Cuellar, Nevada’s Youth of the Year, and art show highlighting Club member projects and activities, and the Carson City Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting.
On hand for the festivities will be representatives from the William N. Pennington Foundation, builder Shaheen Beauchamp, architectural firm Lumos and Associates, and design firm Tectonics; Katie Leao, Club chief professional officer and Matt Sampson, program director, for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada; Kurt Meyer, president, and Andie Wilson, vice president, of the Club’s board of directors and student Teen Center project leaders.
