Stewart Father's Day Powwow continues today in Carson City
Don't miss the final day of the Stewart Father's Day Powwow at the Stewart Facility, 5500 Snyder Ave., in Carson City. Exhibits, demonstrations, food, and art vendors and the Grand Entry Dance begins at noon today and will continue until about 4 p.m.
Since festivities began Friday, the turnout has been tremendous, organizers say, with this year garnering the largest attendance in the Powwow's eight-year history, said Sherry Rupert, executive director of the state of Nevada Indian Commission.
"We've been more than blessed," said Rupert.
There are more than 300 dancers who have signed up for the Grand Entry events.
"American Indians have been in this area for tens of thousands of years. The powwow is important to our community because it gives people a chance to learn about the culture," Rupert said. "The community can learn about the history and talk with dancers and alumni of the school."
This year, the main emphasis is to establish the Stewart Indian Cultural Center. The idea for this weekend's event has been to promote awareness, garner support and to raise money for the Center. Money for the construction end of the Center has been donated through the cultural affairs commission, while fundraising efforts are now underway for management of the project.
