Lodi woman identified in Lake Tahoe fatal crash; three Carson City residents injured

The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified a Lodi, Calif., woman as the victim of a two-vehicle fatal crash that happened Sunday on Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove at Lake Tahoe.

Reyna Vizcaara, 24, died at the scene of the crash, reported at 2:55 p.m., said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen. Four others were injured and taken to area hospitals, including three Carson City residents. Two remain hospitalized.

The preliminary crash investigation details indicate a white 2011 Toyota Corolla 4-door sedan was traveling west in the left or inside lane of the 4-lane highway and driven by 29-year-old Eduardo A. Vizcarra-Sicairos from Lodi, Calif and his wife, Reyna, was riding in the right front passenger seat.

Traveling eastbound was a blue Hyundai Elantra 4-door sedan being driven by Shanna D. White, 26, of Carson City. Shanna had two passengers riding in the vehicle with her; Kellie Kerklay and Katelyn Kraiprai, both 21 and from Carson City.

For reasons still being investigated, Vizcarra-Sicairos lost control of his vehicle and it skidded sideways or broadside across the double-yellow line and into the path of the opposing vehicle, Allen said. The front of the Hyundai struck the right side of the Toyota resulting in fatal injuries to Reyna.

Both vehicles came to rest on their wheels blocking at least two lanes of the highway. Three of the injured were initially transported from the scene by ground ambulance and the other injured motorist was transported by Cal Star’s helicopter.

Care Flight was initially dispatched to scene and then diverted to the park-n-ride parking lot just west of US 395 in Carson City to meet one of the ambulances where one more patient was airlifted to Reno. All four patients were taken to Renown Regional Medical Center. Shanna and Kellie were treated and released and are recovering at home Monday while Katelyn and Eduardo are still being treated at the hospital.

Three of the lanes were blocked for several hours while investigators completed their on-scene portion of the investigation. Troopers and deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office assisted with temporary traffic control duties. All travel lanes were cleared and opened at around 7:40 pm.

At the time of the crash heavy rain and hail were falling and the highway was very wet and weather may have been one of the contributing factors in this collision, Allen said.

Trooper Kris Satterwhite of the Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating this tragedy. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact him at (775) 689-4682 or ksatterwhite@dps.state.nv.us regarding case number NHP-130600878.
