Signups underway for Carson City DARE golf tournament at Silver Oak
Prompted by his 11-year-old son to get involved with the local DARE organization, a Carson City real estate agent is spearheading a golf tournament and kids golf clinic on Saturday, June 17 at Silver Oak Golf and Event Center.
Chris Sieben, a RCM Realty Group realtor, says he was moved at the urging of his son Jordan, who graduated recently from the DARE program at Bordewich Bray Elementary, to give some of his time to help Carson City’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, also known as DARE.
“I had been looking to get involved with different charities or causes for kids and my son mentioned I should get involved with DARE,” he said. “DARE doesn’t get a lot of outside help like other organizations in town. So after speaking with the sheriff, I decided to get the ball rolling and make it work.”
Carson City’s DARE program is a strong one, recognized statewide and nationally for work at the elementary and middle school levels.
Sieben has the support of Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, the sheriff's department and DARE Officer Lisa Davis going into this first-time event, which will raise money for the local DARE organization and its projects including outreach services such as last month’s Cops and Kids, the Aug. 1 National Night Out event at Mills Park and Halloween activities at the Governor’s Mansion.
“We are deeply grateful for RCM Realty, Chris, his son and all involved for this effort,” said Sheriff Furlong. “Carson City has been a golfing community with courses throughout town and golfers who range from the extraordinarily serious to those who play on the weekends. This tournament is an ideal support event for people to come on out, have fun and support DARE.”
Sieben also has the backing of his RCM Broker/co-owner Heidi McFadden, Silver Oak Golf and Event Center General Manager Terrie McNutt plus several local businesses who are donating prizes.
DARE Officer Lisa Davis notes Sieben has shown a “tremendous commitment” to Carson City DARE and helping the organization through fundraising efforts.
Around 60 golfers have signed up thus far for the June 17 best ball tournament. The goal is 140 golfers to sign up for the tournament. There will be an after-tournament barbecue and prizes for first and last place teams, closest to the pin and whoever is lucky enough to make a hole-in-one. Golfers can register at www.RCMNevada.com or call/text Sieben at 775-450-5607 for entry information.
That’s not all. Organizers want youngsters interested to sign up for a golf clinic at Silver Oak the same day as the tournament. Taught by a staff of golf pros at the course, the clinic runs from 9 to 10 a.m. for 8 to 10 year olds and 10:30 to 11:30 for 11 to 13 year olds. To sign up a youngster up for the clinic, register at RCMNevada.com or call or text Sieben at 775-450-5607. There is a fee for the clinic, with money raised going directly to the DARE program.
