Carson City Sheriff's Office issues PSA regarding vehicle registration, insurance, licenses and more

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is providing another public safety announcement with information on vehicle registration, driver’s license, and car insurance requirements.

If your vehicle registration is about to expire you may renew your registration online or by mail.

There is no grace period and you do not need to make an appointment at the DMV to register your vehicle for renewal. Simply renew the registration online or through a kiosk at the DMV without waiting in line.

If you purchased a new vehicle at a dealership you may also register your vehicle online without the need to wait in line at the DMV.

If your temporary vehicle permit has expired the DMV may provide a 30-day extension ($2.00 dollar DMV fee) so you may legally drive your vehicle with a current moving permit.

If you purchase a vehicle via private sale you must have your vehicle registered legally in order drive on public roadways.

Drivers licenses may also be renewed online. Most Nevada drives are eligible for online renewal.

Your license may be mailed to you with your existing photo. Qualifications are ages 16-70, for 4- or 8-year non-commercial driver’s license, renew up to 60 days prior to expiration or 364 after, use the Address Change transaction if you need to update your address.

Your license will automatically renew if it is due within the next 60 days. If your license is suspended or revoked, you must visit the DMV in person.

The DMV backlog for appointments is about two to three months out. You may stand in line for walk in business. Carson City DMV lines are up to two to three hours wait time in the mornings and about an hour wait time in the afternoons.

You are required to have proof of insurance while driving a motor vehicle. Evidence of insurance may be either by printed card or in an electronic format displayed on a mobile device. There is no need to visit a DMV office for most insurance issues. Use the Internet, telephone or mail.

Your insurance must be written for Nevada and at least one of the named insured must appear on the vehicle registration. Minimum coverage is 25/50/20. If you drop the liability insurance on any vehicle for any reason, you must cancel the registration and surrender the license plates. You may cancel the registration through MyDMV and mail the plates. See Plate Surrender.

If you are new to Nevada, you must notify your insurance company that you have moved here. Your policy must be written for Nevada. Out-of-state insurance is not accepted.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will enforce all vehicle registrations, car insurance violations, and driver’s license violations. If you have numerous of the above-mentioned violations, you could be subjected to having your vehicle towed.

You may also receive additional incurred costs. You may contact the Carson City DMV for more information. Attached are links with more information on registration renewals, insurance information, and driver’s license renewal options.
