Carson City sheriff's log: Couple jailed on felony child endangerment charges

A Carson City couple faces multiple charges after being arrested Tuesday on suspicion of felony child endangerment after officers did a welfare check at a Rand Avenue motel and found drugs and alcohol within reach of children living there, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

The couple, ages 43 and 30, were each booked on multiple charges. Carson Now is withholding the names of the parents due to the ages of the children. According to the arrest report, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office school resource officer was advised that a female student at Mark Twain Elementary School had not been attending classes, having missed 40 days of school and had trouble in class, including exhaustion and sleeping in the classroom. In one instance she slept for two hours and in another instance crawled under a teacher's desk to sleep.

Officers arrived at the motel at 11:30 a.m. with a man answering the door. Officers told the man they were checking on the safety of the children. The man said he had taken his daughter to school that morning but she was late getting there. Officers could smell an odor of alcoholic beverage from the man and he had red, watery eyes.

He was trying to keep the door to the room closed but officers could see his 4-year-old son inside. The man allowed officers in the room and found the man’s wife sleeping. Next to the bed was a homemade marijuana bong among green bottles and a child’s juice drink bottle. Located on the floor was a half bottle of Southern Comfort whiskey found next to some of the children’s toys, the arrest report states.

Officers asked for a K9 search of the room. The man advised there was marijuana in the room, which was weighed and amounted to about 2 grams. Also found was an empty bottle of codeine medication filled May 11. Food inside the residence consisted of cookies, cakes, donuts and candy.

Division of Child and Family Services arrived on scene to investigate. The parents were arrested on the felony charges. The man also was charged with being an ex-felon failing to register and possession of marijuana. Both were also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. His bail: $5,016. Her bail: $3,637.
