Dave Cook Memorial Scholarship established for Nevada resident, incoming college student
The $10,000 four-year Dave Cook Memorial Scholarship has been established by the Elaine P. Wynn and Family Foundation in partnership with the Nevada Public Education Foundation for an incoming freshman pursuing an Education degree at a Nevada System of Higher Education institution beginning in fall 2016.
“The scholarship in Dave’s name is a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to education as both a practitioner being a college economics professor and as a policy maker serving at the local and state levels,” said Steve Canavero, Ph.D., Superintendent of Public Instruction.
A fourth-generation Nevadan, Cook graduated from Bishop Gorman High School in 1968. He earned emeritus status as a college professor of business and economics. He served on the Nevada Commission for Post-Secondary Education as an appointee of the Governor and as an elected member of the Nevada State Board of Education. He was first elected in 1988 as a member of the Carson City School District Board of Trustees.
He retired as a professor of Economics and Business at Western Nevada College in 2009 after 27 years of teaching. Cook died Oct. 12, 2015.
Nevada residency is a requirement, and the Dave Cook Scholar will pledge to teach for three years in Nevada upon graduation. A 3.2 grade-point average and demonstrated financial need are also required. Visit www.doe.nv.gov for more information.
