Eyes on Carson City: Local events highlight Mother's Day weekend
Family events are the highlight of Mother's Day weekend in Carson City as the Nevada state capital adds motherhood to its continuing celebration of spring.
From the 32nd Annual Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) sponsored Spring Carnival at Mills Park to the Early Spring Farmer's Market in the downtown Carson City historic district, the Eagle Valley was abuzz Saturday with happenings all around town.
The Carson City Fire Department displayed an engine at the Browser's Corner Parking Lot Book Sale and Family Fun Day on East Washington Street across from the Carson City Library, along with the new Pedal Library bicycle unit complete with book trailer. This event lasts until 4 p.m. Saturday.
Historic Silver Saddle Ranch off Carson River Road in East Carson City hosted a Spring Open House until 2 p.m. Saturday, featuring an early morning bird walk and breakfast as well as live music until noon. Tours of the 800-acre ranch property were scheduled throughout the event.
The Greenhouse Project, headquartered at Carson High School, hosted an annual Mother's Day Spring Plant Sale Saturday morning until 1 p.m. The sale featured numerous plants ready for the garden.
Visit www.carsoncitygreenhouse.org for more information on the locally-based Greenhouse Project.
A Spring Fling Craft Fair, hosted by Projections Photography, is being held at 251 Jeanell Drive off Winnie Lane Saturday until 6 p.m. this evening. The event is a fundraiser for Sierra Therapeutic Equestrian Program (STEP) Inc., a local non-profit horse riding therapy program located in Southern Washoe Valley.
The annual Early Spring Farmer's Market, a prelude to the Saturday 3rd and Curry Farmer's Market that starts in June, was also held in the downtown Carson City historic district at the corner of West Musser and Nevada streets.
Featuring early season fruits and vegetables for sale, as well as crafts and other locally produced farm goods, the Early Spring Farmer's Market occurs each Saturday in May.
Finally, the Annual Spring Celebration Carnival at Mills Park runs through Sunday at 8 p.m. Carnival and ride hours are noon to 10 p.m. Saturday. It opens again at noon Sunday.
Skateboarding, scooter and BMX demos, put on by The Wheelhouse in Carson City, are also being held in the skate park at the east end of Mills Park.
