City Wide Short Film Competition Screening and Judging this Saturday at BAC
The assignment prompts were given and now it is showtime. The 2017 City Wide Short Film Competition will arrive front and center stage this Saturday in Carson City with the screening and judging grand finale.
The community is invited to view a variety of short films that were created by both local and out-of-area filmmakers who all had exactly one week to make a film that is between 5 and 9 minutes long.
The screening and award ceremony will kick off with a red carpet ceremony beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 West King Street. Screenings begin at 6 p.m.
So what will the audience see? Participating filmmakers were given prompts — three items that must be incorporated into their films — and a list of genres to choose from. Some examples of the genres they received are comedy, historical, romance, noir, science fiction, musical, drama and silent. While every filmmaker had the same prompts to work with, they could choose a genre that suited them best.
This year’s prompts for 18 and over are:
PROP: A golf ball
SOUND: Knuckles cracking
LINE OF DIALOGUE:
“How deep is that?”
Under 18 filmmaker prompts are:
PROP: Kitchen Timer
SOUND: Coins
LINE OF DIALOGUE: "No, I want it to be green."
"What you’ll see Saturday night is the results of a week of hard work that began with writing an original screenplay," said Darla Bayer, organizer of the competition.
From there, the filmmakers had to line up actors and crew, scout locations, secure their production equipment and shoot their films. Once it was shot, then they had to edit, add sound effects and music and put all the little finishing touches on their films before the submission deadline. All the while, they had to be sure their films didn’t go over the 9-minute maximum time limit. A daunting task, indeed.
Because Saturday marks the 5th year of the event, organizers will celebrate the occasion by screening some of the past winners first as a way of marking its anniversary. So, before the competing films in each category are presented, the audience will get to see some of those past winners from over the years.
Organizers are extending a big community wide "thank you" to the Carson City Visitors Bureau and the Brewery Arts Center.
"They’ve helped us in so many ways over the years, and without their help, we wouldn’t even have City Wide and our sister competition, the Carson Creepy Short Horror Film Competition," said Bayer. "And another big thank you goes out to local short film moviegoers for spending their evening watching local films. Your support means a lot to everyone who works hard behind the scenes to bring these screenings to you."
