Pair jailed on multiple charges after Carson City deputy finds them in stolen car

A man and woman were arrested early Wednesday on multiple felony charges including possession of stolen property and drug possession after a deputy found the pair in a car reported stolen, Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Andrew Wayne Miller, 30, of West Riverton, Utah, and Danielle Maddox, 25, of East Middle Utah were arrested at 1:27 a.m. Miller also faces a felony fugitive from justice warrant out of Utah for burglary related matter and misdemeanor charges of possession of burglary tools. Both also face misdemeanor charges of being in possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the arrest report, a deputy patrolling the 3300 block of Highway 50 East observed a man slouched over in the driver’s seat of a black Honda Civic with Utah license plates.

He checked on the man to see if he was OK and the man identified himself. The deputy conducted a check on the vehicle, which returned as a green Honda not black. He also checked the VIN number associated to the plate. The VIN number was removed from the dash board. The VIN did not match DMV records and the deputy received a “stolen vehicle” hit from DMV.

Backup deputies were called and the man and woman inside the vehicle were detained. The man asked to speak with a deputy. He said he was sorry that he lied about his name. The officer read him his Miranda rights. The man continued saying he gave the officer his brother’s information because he knew his brother was clear and without warrants.

The man provided his full name and date of birth. The man told the deputy: “I know they are gonna tell you but I have warrants out of Salt Lake City. Do you think they will come pick me up?”

Dispatcher advised the man’s license was suspended for failure to appear and comply with a court order. The woman was read her Miranda rights, she said she understood and agreed to speak. The officer advised that the vehicle was reported stolen. An inventory of the car was conducted. Officers found a sun glasses case with five hypodermic needles, a spoon with burn residue and cotton swabs, all items commonly used to inject controlled substances. The deputy tested the items which came back positive for heroin, the report states.

Also in the vehicle, officers collected a back pack with several flash lights, a digital scale, several pairs of gloves and small tools, identified as mechanical punches used for starting pilot holes and tools to break glass and a can of spray paint in the area where the stereo was supposed to be.

Bail for Miller: $61,137, including a $25,000 bail amount out of Utah. Bail for Maddox, $28,637.

In other arrests:
— A 25-year-old Carson City man was arrested Wednesday in the 1400 block of South Carson Street for felony suspicion of attempted grand larceny of a motor vehicle, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Brandon Alatorre was taken into custody on the charge at 6:50 p.m. According to the arrest report, a deputy was dispatched to the area in reference to an attempted vehicle theft.
The deputy met with the victim who said a man came into the store and asked to use the phone. He stated the man left the scene but something was not right about him.

The victim said the man appeared to be very nervous and paranoid. The victim said he went out to his car to get his cigarettes and said that at the time there wasn’t anything wrong with his car.

The victim went back into the store and helped a few customers and noticed the suspect outside the store again acting strange.

The victim asked the suspect if he was in trouble or on the run and he said he was. The victim told the man he needed to leave the property. The victim advised that he then went back to his car and saw that someone had tried to hot wire it, the arrest report states.

The deputy observed wires under the steering wheel had been pulled down and cut. Nothing else was missing from inside the vehicle. The victim showed the investigating deputy surveillance video which showed the man walk into the store. Another deputy was in the area looking for the suspect and advised he found him inside a casino.

The suspect was escorted from the casino, and detained. Alatorre was read his Miranda rights where he told the deputy he did attempt to steal the vehicle because he needed a car, the arrest report states. Bail: $10,000.

— A 47-year-old Carson City woman, Kathleen Amber Emery, was arrested Wednesday, 6:40 p.m. in the 1600 block of Brown Street for two felony warrants alleging burglary and grand larceny. Both warrants were issued April 25, 2017 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $5,000.

— A 34-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Thursday, 12:32 a.m. at 20 College Parkway for misdemeanor suspicion of battery with a prior conviction of domestic violence, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

According to the arrest report, deputies were called to the scene and met with the suspect and victim. The suspect showed signs of drinking and did not have any injuries. The victim’s arm was red and swollen in what appeared to be a fresh injury.

A deputy observed the bedroom door frame was broken. He learned that during a verbal argument, the victim went into the bedroom and closed the door to prevent a physical altercation. The suspect broke through the door and pushed her down on the bed and began hitting her on her left side, the arrest report states.

The arresting deputy obtained a breath sample from the suspect with a .290 result. He was arrested and taken to jail. Bail: $5,000.
