Business Spotlight: Brothers pair up ventures in old Classy Seconds building
Josh and Ian Densford had been watching the space at 411 Hot Springs Road in Carson City since they had learned Classy Seconds would be relocating to its new facility on Gordon Street off U.S. Highway 50 East.
The two brothers were operating Poppin Tags Thrift Shop in the same commercial complex as Classy Seconds, and they were already planning an expansion of their existing thrift store.
Once that 9,000 square foot warehouse had become available, the brothers decided it was time to make a move.
"We heard that this space was going to become available once Classy Seconds moved into its new building, and we were interested in the building for our thrift store," Josh Densford said.
The new space has given them the elbow room they sought for their business operations, which now includes a retail fabrics store called Out of Mindesigns.
Josh Densford said they got the idea after Mill End Fabrics on Stewart Street closed its doors. Both brothers had worked there for a while and learned the particulars of the fabric industry.
"Combined we have about 21 years experience in the fabric retail world," Josh said. "Carson City needs a good fabric store with a variety of diversified fabrics."
Out of My Mindesigns opened for business this past Sunday, April 15, carrying fabrics and materials for quilting, upholstery, clothing, home decor dressings and more.
"We have up upholstery weight materials, home decorators, polar fleece, spandex and knits," Josh said. "We also carry quilting cottons, lots of trims -- from classic lace to high end -- as well as foam, one of our big features."
Then there is all of the hardware that goes with fabrics, too: Buttons, zippers, snaps and buckles.
"We're hoping to be able to have a diversified selection," Josh said. "We are appealing to people who are into fashion to make clothing, to do upholstery, home decor, and from beginner to advanced."
Urban Thrift is not quite ready to open, the brothers said. They are hoping in about a week to start welcoming customers to the fresh rebranding of Poppin Tags.
This thrift operation, they said, will specialize in hard-to-find items that the keen-eyed shopper is often in search of.
"We can get a lot of cool things that you wouldn't normally see in a thrift store," the Densfords said.
This is because the brothers go out into the community to find the items that customers are often looking for.
"We go out and buy about 97 percent of our product from estate sales, yard sales and storage units," Josh said. "If you are looking for something in particular, we have connections to find things."
The brothers said their goal is to preserve the integrity of pre-owned thrift goods, while keeping prices competitive.
"We take pride in trying to bring back thrift in terms of prices and quality of goods," they said.
Urban Thrift and Out of My Mindesigns will celebrate their grand openings Saturday, May 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 411 Hot Springs Road.
