Carson City man arrested for drug possession, defrauding an innkeeper after allegedly sneaking into vacant hotel room
A 44-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 3800 block of S. Carson Street for felony possession of a controlled substance, felony possession of a red card without the owner’s consent, possession of drug paraphernalia, defrauding an innkeeper, and obstructing.
According to the report, Steven Marc Chan was arrested after deputies were dispatched to a local hotel on report of an unwanted subject. Upon arrival deputies were informed that a woman who had paid for the night had checked out the day prior and that the room was now occupied by “unknown people.”
Staff stated that a male had asked to visit room no. 223 which staff found odd because the room was listed as vacant. Staff wished to have the occupant trespassed and press charges against him.
Deputies went up to room no. 223 and knocked and heard a male voice ask “who is it.” The manager announced himself and the deputies announced themselves as well. The male then became quiet.
Deputies announced themselves multiple times and asked that the occupants of the room come to the door.
The manager gave deputies a card that could override the deadbolt to open the door partially. With the door partially open they continued to announce themselves and could hear the toilet flushing several times, presumably to destroy evidence, according to the report.
Deputies used a deadbolt tool that allowed them to fully open the door when a man identified as Steven Chan stepped out of the room. He was placed into custody.
Inside the room in the bathroom sink deputies located a soda can used to smoke methamphetamine according to the report. There was a small scale with methamphetamine residue on the bed along with a lighter and butane torch. Deputies also located more methamphetamine on top of the nightstand.
Deputies located a backpack on the bed with Chan’s identification card inside along with two credit cards which did not belong to him.
He was transported to the Carson City jail without incident.
