Lyon County prepares for flood potential with personnel planning, ditch clearing, more sandbags
Lyon County is actively preparing for a high spring and summer runoff on the Carson and Walker rivers, including personnel exercises Wednesday designed to respond to and recover from various flooding scenarios.
A tabletop exercise is an activity in which key personnel assigned emergency management roles and responsibilities are gathered to discuss, in a non-threatening environment, various simulated emergency situations, said Lyon County Manager Jeff Page. This exercise is being facilitated by the Nevada Division of Emergency Management.
Page has directed personnel to meet with property owners on the Walker River to ensure they understand that flooding may occur and provide them with information to obtain sand and sandbags. He has also authorized the purchase of an additional 60,000 sandbags to ensure ample supply.
Page reported that the Walker River Irrigation District has been diligent with drain ditch clearing and keeping the County informed of any changes to releases from the Bridgeport and Topaz Reservoirs. He reports that the river cleaning project in 2015 has been a big help during the early high water events
Page has also been working with state officials on the Carson River to help reduce the effects of high water for Churchill County without increasing the possibility of flooding on the river throughout Lyon County. Crews have been working on drainage issues throughout Central Lyon County to improve flow and reduce the effects of high water on private properties.
Lyon County has an emergency telephonic notification system through Code Red. Members of the public that have a cell phone or unlisted telephone number can register to be alerted to emergencies in their community or neighborhood by going to the County’s Emergency Management Page at : http://lyon-county.org/777/Emergency-Management and click on the register link.
