You must include and manage electronic files as records
Are you developing your records management instruments and solutions in the same way that you previously handled your paper? With changes in regulatory guidelines regarding electronic records, is your organization at risk?
Electronic files should be addressed in the same way as paper files when it comes to records declaration and management. If the electronic file meets the criteria of being a record, it must be managed as a record and all applicable retention and disposition policies will apply. The fact that an electronic file is not paper does not exclude or exempt it from being discoverable and a potential audit risk. The challenge is in the fact it is electronic, a somewhat unfamiliar realm for many when it comes to records management.
