Vietnam Veterans honored at Carson City ceremony in Mills Park
Dozens of military veterans, families and community members saluted the fallen during the Vietnam Veterans Day of Remembrance ceremony at Mills Park Saturday.
The ceremony was presented by the Carson Area Chapter 388 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.
"Today we share a few moments with our fellow veterans, family and friends to reflect on what that war meant and what it means to us today,” said Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell.
The Mayor, who is also a Vietnam War and U.S. Veteran, was the guest speaker at the ceremony. The program also featured a Color Guard and remarks by members of the chapter.
"As I look out at all of you today, I see friends, some of you I know, others I don't, but friends nevertheless," said Mayor Crowell. "Yes, we have our differences, but for each of us here today we are a veteran, veteran spouse or family or a friend. There is a common bond that unites us to life, a very real feeling of comradery, mutual respect and understanding."
Ameican involvement in Southeat Asia - and Vietnam in particular - lasted 20 years, from the 1950s until 1974 when the last American civilians were airlifted out of Saigon in April 1975.
Between 1965 and 1973 more than 58,000 service men and women were killed in Vietnam, while over 1,600 were listed as missing in action, according to the National Archives.
Nevada sufferd 151 casualities during the Vietnam War. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the Nevada Vietnam War Memorial at Mills Park.
"Today as we pass the torch of liberty and rememberance to succeeding generations, let us truly say, welcome home," said Mayor Crowell.
