Laborers Union Local 169 donated $12,500 in grocery store gift cards to seven local nonprofits in northern Nevada to support the local community in this time of need.

UPDATE: On Wednesday, by executive order, Governor Steve Sisolak ordered the flags of the United States and the State of Nevada to be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol and State public buildings and grounds from sunrise until sunset on Thursday, October 29, 2020 as a mark of solemn respect and in remembrance of Carson City Mayor and native Nevadan Robert “Bob” Crowell, whose memorial is being held Thursday.

Verne R. Horton of Carson City, Nevada passed away at his residence on October 19, 2020. He was born February 1, 1941 in Los Angeles, CA and is survived by loving and devoted wife of 23 years, Brenda; sons Sean and Scott, daughter Debra, 5 grandchildren and brother, Jim Horton.

Carson City Mayor, attorney and Vietnam veteran Robert L. "Bob" Crowell died overnight. He was 74.

Robert L. "Bob" Crowell was a native Nevadan, born in the mining town of Tonopah and raised in Carson City. An attorney by profession, Bob was a Vietnam Veteran and retired Navy Captain. He was elected Mayor of Carson City in 2008 and assumed his duties as Mayor on January 5, 2009. He was re-elected in 2012 and 2016. Prior to being elected Mayor, Bob served 11 years on the Carson City School Board of Trustees.

Dozens of military veterans, families and community members saluted the fallen during the Vietnam Veterans Day of Remembrance ceremony at Mills Park Saturday.

The ceremony was presented by the Carson Area Chapter 388 of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

"Today we share a few moments with our fellow veterans, family and friends to reflect on what that war meant and what it means to us today,” said Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell.

American military veterans, families, friends and the community are invited to the Vietnam Veterans Day of Remembrance ceremony this Saturday at Mills Park in Carson City.

About 20 military veterans commit suicide every day in the United States, a number that has been holding steady in recent years.

10:10 a.m. — Veterans officially “Welcomed Home” and thanked for their service. They, and the public are invited to avail themselves of services and outreach opportunities provided by veteran service organizations in Northern Nevada. Also available are static displays of Vietnam era equipment, a Vietnam mobile museum and music from the era with US Navy Veteran and DJ, Mr. Shane Whitecloud.

Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program will host its second Reaching For Zero: A Veteran Appreciation and Veteran Suicide Prevention and Awareness Brunch on Saturday, April 13 at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City.

CARSON CITY — The motto at the Veterans Resource Center at Western Nevada College is “Veterans Helping Veterans.” For the local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America the rallying cry is “One Generation of Veterans Passing It on to The Next.”

Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program and multiple agencies from around Carson City will hold a Veterans Resource Fair on Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Carson Nugget.

Veterans and their caregivers will be provided with information on services and programs provided by area non-profits, advisory groups, government agencies, and the private sector. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This is going to be an epic Fathers’ Day weekend. Carson City Off-Road sponsored by Epic Rides has taken over downtown with everything mountain bike and plays host to a free Music Festival in McFadden Plaza. Don’t miss Arts and Culture Day at the Nevada State Railroad Museum with unlimited rides on the Steam Train, special vendors, and more. Stewart Indian School will be a hotspot of activity with the annual Fathers’ Day PowWow underway. This is just the tip of the iceberg, read on for more fun than you’ll know what to do with.

RSVP Presents "Reaching For Zero", A Veteran Appreciation and Veteran Suicide Awareness Brunch. The event will be held Saturday, Jan. 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion Nevada Room.

Here is an updated parade list for all the entries in the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday. Note, there was a last-minute change in streets where the entries are supposed to line up that is different than the printed program. The change was made to accommodate some larger floats. The Carson Area Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America will gather to honor those who have given their all and have yet to come home during a POW/MIA Recognition Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds.

The Carson Area Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America will be sponsoring a 2017 POW/MIA Recognition Day Ceremony on Friday, Sept. 15th at the Nevada Veteran's Memorial Wall on the Nevada Capitol Grounds in Carson City.

Every Thursday, house band the Smoken Rabbits, gets the place jumping, but this party won’t end until Sunday. The weather is finally cooperating, so karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar will be out on their patio – J and M Productions has thousands of songs to choose from. What I love most about Carson City is our ability to be outdoorsy, patriotic, geeky, and none of the above - all at the same time. The Littlest Things in Carson City is more than a petting zoo, it’s a refuge. You’ll find ponies, goats, puppies, ducks, and more at this great non-profit rescue and they are always looking for animal-loving volunteers. Stop by their open house/volunteer orientation this afternoon to check it out. It’s Tartan Day at the Legislature, so don’t be alarmed if you see a few kilts around town. A retired United States Marine gunnery sergeant has been named Nevada Veteran of the Month by the Nevada Office of Veterans Services (NOVS).

Frank Reynolds of Carson City was selected by nomination for his work serving fellow veterans both in the community and statewide.

Members of the Carson City Veterans Community Council (CCVCC) met Wednesday afternoon to discuss changes within existing member organizations, as well as to welcome new members onto the council.

Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell and City Manager Nick Marano, both veterans, attended Wednesday's meeting and highlighted changes to the city's new, improved web site scheduled to go public by the end of May.

I was honored to attend and cover Saturday's Vietnam War Remembrance and Welcome Home ceremony near the Nevada Vietnam War Memorial at Mills Park.

While there, a television image suddenly came to mind of a Vietnam War veteran sitting alone at the counter of a cafe while a young boy and his mother paid attention to a uniformed service man who had just come in.

The scene was from a television spot paid for by moments.org, a production of the INSP network, entitled "Thank You For Your Service (A Moment of Truth)."

Nevada Vietnam War veterans were honored Saturday in Carson City as dozens gathered in Mills Park to observe the Vietnam Veterans Day of Remembrance and hold a welcome home ceremony at the Nevada Vietnam War Memorial.

Frank Reynolds, current president of the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) local chapter 388 in Carson City, opened the ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance and the chapter’s chaplain delivered the invocation.

Military veterans in Carson City can now access information on resources and services available to them using a central Internet-based hub.

Participation in Carson City's local Green Zone Initiative push has more than doubled since the first meeting called together by Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong on Feb. 10.

More than two dozen people attended Wednesday's meeting of the Carson City Veterans Community Council (CCVCC), the local branch of the state of Nevada's Green Zone Initiative, a program introduced by the Governor's Interagency Council on Veterans Affairs.

The Carson Area Chapter 388 of the Vietnam Veterans of America cordially invites all Vietnam Veterans and the general public to the 2016 “Welcome Home” Vietnam Veterans Ceremony to be held at the Nevada Vietnam War Memorial at Mills Park.

The half hour Ceremony is intended to honor those who served during the Vietnam War and came home while remembering those Brothers and Sisters who served, but never made it home.

The Ceremony will be followed by a “No-Host” Reception from 5:30-8:30 at the Gold Dust Hotel and Casino located at 2171 E William St, Carson City, NV 89701.

On this day, November 11, 2015, we pay tribute to all those who wear and have worn the uniform in the service of their country. On this day we also pay tribute to the families and friends of our veterans who provide both needed and grateful support to our service members.
