Suspect flees Carson City deputies, enters church, catches cab and goes to jail
A 34-year-old man was arrested Monday after he was seen exiting a Jeep on Bryan Circle that was reported stolen, then eluding police by going into a church and later catching a cab, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Shaun Louis Hawkins of Reno was arrested at 12:41 p.m. in the area of College Parkway and Goni Road after a sheriff’s deputy stopped the taxi he had gotten into when he left St. Teresa Of Avila Catholic Church.
According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatch to the area of Bryan Circle in reference to a possible domestic disturbance. Hawkins, who was sitting in the driver’s seat and a female passenger were observed getting out of the gold in color Jeep as a deputy arrived.
Dispatch advised the vehicle was reported stolen out of Reno. The deputy stopped the woman while the man continued walking and went into a yard on Bryan Circle. Arriving deputies attempted to locate the man, who was wearing a hoody and light colored jeans.
Dispatch advised that a man matching the description went into nearby St. Teresa of Avila church. Deputies checked the area and did not locate the man. Minutes later the church contacted dispatch again and said the man had returned. Deputies returned to the church and learned the man had gotten into a taxi and was going toward College Parkway. The taxi was stopped by a Carson City sheriff’s deputy and the man was arrested.
Hawkins faces a charge of possession of a stolen vehicle along with a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant issued out of Sparks Municipal Court. Bail: $10,890.
