Over $11,000 raised during ‘Brave The Shave’ fundraiser for Childhood Cancer Research
Area residents braved the cold this St. Patrick's Day to raise money for Childhood Cancer Research during the "Brave the Shave" event Saturday in downtown Carson City.
St. Baldrick’s Childhood Cancer Research Foundation in association with the Carson City Firefighters Association and The Fox Brewpub organized the fundraiser, which challenged young and old alike to go bald for children’s cancer research.
Saturday’s event took place at the Fox Brewpub on Bob McFadden Plaza, featuring local residents, business owners and public officials who added a chill to their dome during this snow-covered weekend in support of the St. Baldricks Foundation.
“My daughter is finishing up a treatment for leukemia,” said Sara Morrison. “It’s been a long two years. If I had skin to shed I would do that, but I have plenty of hair to share.”
The first event in 2000 was intended to raise $17,000. But it buzzed quickly beyond the original goal, raising $104,000.
Since then, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation has grown alongside their "Brave the Shave" event with participants going bald across the country each year on St. Patrick's Day, March 17.
So far today, the Carson City fundraiser has garnered more than $11,000 of support, surpassing the goal of $6,000.
“It’s an honor to be a part of this,” said Nikki Mitchell, co-owner of Bespoke Studio. “We feel so greatful to give our time and be a part of something so needed.”
Jeremy Root-Ferguson, a barber at East 50 Barber Shop, said, “To Come out, raise money and raise awareness for childhood cancer is pretty awesome.”
