Business Spotlight: Dog Sports America a place to play with your pooch
There are dog parks, and then there are play spaces for man's best friend.
Dog Sports America in East Carson City is a place for your dog to play.
Featuring nearly 6,000 square feet of warehouse space, Dog Sports America provides adequate room for a host of canine activities, including flyball, agility, dock diving, rally, nose work and barn hunt.
"Carson City and the Northern Nevada area have really needed this kind of 'have fun with your dog' place," said co-owner Liz Leisek. "So we decided to open part of the building for Barn Hunt, Flyball classes and trials in December 2016."
Leisek said longtime local residents will recognize the warehouse space at 3905 Fairview Drive as the spot of the old community roller skating rink. It's situated across Fairview from the old Carson City Animal Shelter and at the corner of Lepire Drive.
But now, instead of two-legged skaters, the venue attracts four-legged acrobats.
"We got involved in the dog sport venue several years ago when we started training our rescue, Ginger, and Lucy, our Australian Shepherd," Leisek said. "Ginger excelled at Barn Hunt and is now a three-time national champion. She’s the most highly decorated dog in the country."
In fact, Leisek said nearly a dozen other dogs have trained in Barn Hunt through Dog Sports America and have gone on to the national competition.
Leisek said dog sports are about play as much as they are about competition. They are as appropriate for puppies as they are senior canines, too.
But Dog Sports America isn't just about play. There's a fair amount of training that takes place on the courses laid out.
"If it has to do with dog, we do it," Leisek said. "Whether people want a well mannered house dog, a sport star, or even have Westminster dreams, Dog Sports America is the place to be. There is always something here you can do with your dog."
Working in cooperation with professional trainers, Dog Sports America offers a venue for canine training of all sorts. From classes that teach conformation for dog shows to puppy training and obedience basics, Leisek said canine owners can find a place at Dog Sports America for their pooches.
Leisek said she and co-owner John Fisher decided to start a dog sports business in Carson City after the area's only other local play facility closed down. At that point, they decided to open their own.
"We love the close knit community of the Northern Nevada and Northern California dog sport world," she said. "We’ve met so many amazing people here locally and really love what we do in helping people enjoy the relationships with their furry best friends."
