Carson City sheriff's deputies make multiple DUI arrests over weekend

A 24-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Sunday for suspicion of misdemeanor DUI second and using a cell phone while driving, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

According to the arrest report, a deputy observed a man driving with a cell to his right ear as he operated the steering wheel. Due to the circumstances of seeing the driver driving with the cell phone to their ear, the officer conducted a traffic stop. The officer made contact with the driver and could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person and an odor of burnt marijuana.

The man had red, droopy, watery eyes and slurred speech. The officer observed an empty vodka bottle on the floorboard of the rear seat. The officer asked the man if he had been drinking. the man said no. He told the officer he would conduct a standardized field sobriety test to prove his was sober.

The man showed signs of impairment on the tests. He provided a preliminary breath test of .205 and was arrested at 12:17 a.m. for suspicion of DUI of alcohol and marijuana. At jail he consented to an evidentiary blood test. Bail: $2,500.

In other arrests:
— A 30-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Saturday, 1:59 a.m. for suspicion of DUI and possession of a firearm while under the influence.

According to the booking report, a deputy observed a vehicle traveling eastbound Highway 50 and Airport Road with its front headlights off.

The deputy activated their emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The vehicle came to a stop at Airport Road and Woodside Drive.

The deputy approached the vehicle and made contact with the driver and passenger. The deputy observed the driver to have bloodshot, red and watery eyes. The deputy could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from inside the vehicle. The driver stated they had been drinking and that she had two drinks herself at around 11 p.m.

She consented to a series of standardized field sobriety tests. As she exited the vehicle a firearm was located in the driver's door. The firearm was a semi-automatic handgun. She stated the handgun was her husband's and that she had forgotten it was in the vehicle. The handgun was rendered safe and place in the officer' patrol vehicle.

The officer asked the woman questions. She stated she had two vodka mixed drinks and stated she had smoked marijuana at around 10:30 p.m. She agreed to standardized field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment on the tests. She consented to a preliminary breath test with a result of .128 and was arrested.

The woman refused to submit to evidentiary tests. The deputy applied for a telephonic search warrant. At 2:20 a.m. a judge granted the warrant and two vials of blood were drawn. She was booked for suspicion of DUI and possession of a firearm under the influence of alcohol. Bail: $1,437.

— A 45-year-old Sparks man was arrested early Monday for suspicion of DUI. According to the booking report, a deputy observed a vehicle facing northbound on Curry Street. The officer observed a person inside a running vehicle with its lights on. The officer was unable to differentiate if the person inside was sleeping or was slumped over the wheel. The officer waited for the vehicle for approximately five minutes and did not observe activity from or within the vehicle.

The officer conducted an impromptu welfare check on the vehicle and observed the man sitting in the driver's seat, slumped over sleeping. The officer knocked on the passenger side window in an attempt to wake the man. He stirred but did not notice the officer's appearance, the report states.

The officer continued to knock. The man partially opened his eyes but did not acknowledge the officer. As the officer continued to knock the man removed the key from the ignition and attempted to re-enter the key into the ignition. The officer then made contact with the man on the driver's side.

After a continued effort to wake the man, he opened the door. The officer could smell a strong odor of acohol from the vehicle. The man's speech was thick and slurred and he showed signs of impairment. When the officer asked for the man's license, he provided several bank cards instead and ultimately gave the officer his wallet to locate the license.

The driver consented to field sobriety tests but then refused to continue the tests. He was arrested for suspicion of DUI. He agreed to an evidentiary blood test. Bail: $1,137.

— A 55-year-old Carson City man was arrested for suspicion of DUI on Sunday, 12:06 a.m. in the 1600 block of East Long Street.

According to the booking report, a deputy observed a vehicle drift in its lane as it passed westbound Highway 50 East through N. Lompa Lane. The deputy followed the vehicle and observed it drift out of its lane, and then abruptly corrected. The deputy was advised by dispatch that the vehicle registration was expired.

The officer conducted the traffic stop and made contact with the driver and could smell a heavy odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. The driver denied he had been drinking. The officer could smell an odor of alcohol coming from his person. He was again asked if he had been drinking. The man replied he had two beers at a casino, the report states.

The man submitted to standardized field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment on the tests. He provided a preliminary breath test of .247 and was arrested for suspicion of DUI. At jail he agreed to an evidentiary blood test. He was also booked for failure to maintain a lane and expired registration. Bail: $1,137.

— A 19-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of minor consuming alcohol and obstructing and resisting. According to the arrest report, the man reportedly fled with two others after one of the three stole a bottle of alcohol from a gas station. A deputy located two of the males, with the one who was later arrested after taking off running from the deputy. Bail: $412.

— A 55-year-old man was arrested Saturday for a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant issued Jan. 9, 2024 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $1,000 cash.

— A 65-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday, 4:15 a.m. in the area of East William and North Stewart for suspicion of DUI and improper method of turn.

According to the booking report a deputy was behind a vehicle, which began making multiple turns, switching lanes, then merging and then maneuvering behind the deputy's vehicle to dissuade from following. The officer observed the vehicle conduct a right hand turn onto William Street turning into the number one lane instead of the number two lane.

The office conducted a traffic stop in the 400 block of East William Street. The officer observed the driver to have the odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his person, red, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. The man admitted to consuming alcholic beverages. He agreed to standardized field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment on the tests. He provided a preliminary breath test of .175 and was arrested for suspicion of DUI. He agreed to an evidentiary blood test. Bail: $1,137.

— A 24-year-old man was arrested early Tuesday morning, March 12, for suspicion of domestic battery, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Deputies responded at 3:34 a.m. to the 1600 block of Airport Road regarding a domestic dispute. Deputies arrived and spoke with both parties. The female party provided video and audio of the dispute, which involved the man pushing the woman.

The man advised he was also pushed. He was read his Miranda warning and stated he understood. He said they argued, she pushed him, she grabbed his shirt and he pushed her back. He admitted to pushing the woman twice, and once against the wall.

Based on admission that he pushed the woman against the wall, and that there was a recording of the altercation, which included sounds of a physical altercation over the phone and preventing the woman from calling a friend for help, the man was determined to be the primary aggressor and was arrested for suspicion of domestic battery. Bail: $3,137.

A 51-year-old Reno woman was arrested Sunday for suspicion of DUI second, expired registration and open container, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office reports that a juvenile is in custody for allegedly making terroristic threats involving students at Carson Middle School via social media.

UPDATE 4:30PM: Four very small fires, amounting to less than a tenth of an acre, were knocked down within 10 minutes of arrival Sunday along the hillside near Lone Mountain Cemetery, said Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Chris Mason.

The cause is under investigation. No structures were damaged. CCFD has determined the fires to be human caused. At this time, the matter is under investigation with CCFD and the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

Three engines and a rescue were assigned to the attack. East Fork Fire assisted for protection on the south side of the city, while Truckee Meadows Fire stood by for protection on the north side of the city.

UPDATE 3:11PM: Some fire engines have cleared the scene, a good sign CCFD has control of the fire. We have left messages and will update as the battalion chief becomes available.

The first novel ambush that caught my attention was described in the Odyssey, where Greek soldiers were able to take the city of Troy by hiding inside a giant horse parked at the city gates as an offering to the goddess Athena.
