Governor Sisolak tours Carson City small business with WNC President Friday
On Friday, Governor Steve Sisolak visited Carson City’s Eve’s Eatery to tour a local business with ties to Western Nevada College.
During his recent State of the State Address, Governor Sisolak reiterated his continued commitment to investing, supporting, and helping small businesses thrive in Nevada, as well as investing in more workforce training programs.
Gov. Sisolak along with WNC Interim President Dr. Kyle Dalpe met with the business owners Eve and Francisco Espinoza in order to learn more about those who have gone through training and education programs at WNC.
“Shop small, eat small; that’s what we need to do,” said Gov. Sisolak. “The small employers are the largest employers that we have in the state of Nevada. It’s the backbone of our economy.”
Dr. Dalpe agreed that investing in local businesses is important to a thriving local economy, and WNC is proud to work with local businesses.
“Nationally and in Nevada, more than half of all jobs available require more than a high school diploma but less than a bachelors degree,” said Dr. Dalpe. “For example, Eve came back to take business classes in order to open this restaurant. That’s what we do everyday because we’re right down the street, so we’re able to get into the communities that we serve.”
“Community colleges know what the work force needs because they are integrated in the community,” said Gov. Sisolak. “Not everyone needs a four year bachelors degree; what they need is training, so they can develop skill sets necessary for their employers.”
“Nevada is a great place; I know small businesses are going through a lot right now,” said Sisolak. “And it’s hard to get business back and get staffed up. When you see someone put their sweat tears and hard work into a place, you have to be impressed.”
