Boys and Girls Club in Carson City among agencies to sponsor USDA food program
The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada and the Washoe Tribe Head Start Office in Carson City are among the sponsoring agencies of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Child and Adult Care Food Program, Nevada Department of Agriculture announced Friday.
Participating agencies represent Churchill, Clark, Douglas, Carson City, Lyon, Mineral and Washoe counties. In addition, one statewide sponsor and several Head Start agency sponsors exist across the state. The Lyon and Mineral County agency sponsor is the Boys & Girls Club of Mason Valley, while in Douglas County the sponsoring agency is Under The Magic Pine Tree.
In Churchill County agency sponsors are Fallon's Navy Region Youth Program Child Development Center and the Fallon Youth Club.
The program provides aid to child and adult care institutions and family or group day care homes for the provision of nutritious foods that contribute to the wellness, healthy growth and development of young children, and the health and wellness of older adults and chronically impaired disabled persons. According to the USDA, more than 3.3 million children and 120,000 adults in the United States receive nutritious meals and snacks each day as part of the day care they receive through the program.
“Nutritious meals and/or snacks are served to all enrolled CACFP participants at no separate charge to participants,” said Donnell Barton, Food and Nutrition administrator for the Department. “Each participating agency receives USDA reimbursement for providing meals to participants to help reduce the rising costs of day care.”
Program eligibility is determined by participating CACFP agencies and is based on household income of each participant. Children, who are members of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) households, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservation or Head Start eligible participants, automatically meet the income guidelines for the free meal category. Participating adults in day care who are members of SNAP households, Supplemental Security Income or Medicaid recipients are also eligible.
