Carson High School CTE photography students take honors
Carson City High School Career and Technology Education student Karsen Law will have his work displayed by the Nevada Museum of Art and the Holland Project Gallery, both in Reno, beginning March 1.
Law received a Gold Key award for a single piece and a Silver Key award for his photographic portfolio through the regional Scholastic Art Awards hosted by the Nevada Museum of Art in February.
His Gold Key piece is also in the running for a potential first, second or third place overall medal for the state Scholastic Art Awards, which will be announced at the Nevada Museum of Art on March 16.
At the beginning of the school year, Law entered a photograph into Photographer's Forum Magazine's photography competition. Law’s submission was one of 100 selected out of 13,000 chosen as a finalist in the hopes of winning one of the top four awards, to be announced soon.
CHS CTE photography student Briana Sanchez placed third overall in the SkillsUSA regional competition and advances to the state competition held at the Reno Convention Center April 5-7.
Sanchez, and three of her classmates, including Law, Sarah Woods and Cassie Mitchell are among the 13 Northern Nevada students to advance to state. Kaelah Bowman also competed at the regional level.
SkillsUSA is one of several Career and Technical Student Organizations available to students at CHS. The organization prepares students for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations by combining students, teachers and industry representatives in applied instruction.
Photography, taught by CHS CTE teacher Kara Ferrin, is one of many Career and Technical Education pathways offered at CHS.
The CTE program at CHS is part of Gov. Sandoval’s CTE initiative, providing education at industry levels in six career cluster areas including professions in information and media technologies, agriculture and natural resources management, business and marketing, hospitality and tourism, and skilled and technical sciences.
Many students will test for and hold national certifications in their chosen field upon graduating from high school, and some will graduate with college credits.
