Power outages in Carson City, high winds close Washoe Valley to all vehicles over 9 feet
Multiple power outages are being reported early Monday afternoon around Carson City and Douglas County due to a weather system that prompted a High Wind Warning earlier this morning for much of the region. Meanwhile, wind gusts flipped two vehicles on I-580 north of Carson City in Washoe Valley late Monday morning causing some traffic delays.
A semi-truck and what appeared to be the remnants of a horse trailer were blown to the side of the freeway. The Nevada Department of Transportation was forced to prohibit high profile vehicles from the interstate as well as Eastlake and Old 395. As of noon, no vehicles above 9 feet were allowed to travel through Washoe Valley on any road.
Power outages happened between East Long, Corbett and Roop and Winnie streets as well as Snyder and South Carson streets as of 12:56 p.m. Monday afternoon affecting more than 2,100 NV Energy customers. Power was restored to much of that area by 2 p.m. Outages were also reported along Jacks Valley Road near Genoa and in the Johnson Lane area of Douglas County.
With gusts upward of 60 mph and up to 85 mph in wind prone areas, the High Wind Warning issued by the National Weather Service is in effect now through 10 p.m. Monday. In Carson City, a wind gust of 48 mph was recorded at around noon, according to CarsonWeather.com.
Trucks, trailers and RVs are being told to sit tight or turn around until the winds die down.
Another storm is moving through the region today bringing the high winds and snow to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra. Several feet of new, wet snow is expected over top of a drier layer of powdery snow through early Thursday.
Travel will be tough, and possibly impossible at times, through the Sierra with no clear break in snowfall once this begins. Expect to add potentially several hours to your travel time over Sierra passes; periods of white-out conditions are anticipated and road closures will be possible. See NVRoads.com or call 511 for road and travel information.
Rain is expected for the valley areas including Carson City, Carson Valley, and Lyon counties through at least Thursday.
