Is Lyon County equipped for continued growth? Commissioners to study issues as population swells
The Lyon County Board of Commissioners will participate in a workshop Feb. 20, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. to discuss and address growth in Lyon County.
County Manager Jeff Page explains that the purpose of the workshop is to inform the Board of the issues facing Lyon County as it relates to growth. He anticipates that the information will bring forth future policy discussions by the Board to address growth throughout unincorporated Lyon County.
Page anticipates that the workshop will assist the board with quelling rumors of uncontrolled growth by presenting data from 2000-2010. In that decade Lyon County experienced a 50 percent plus increase in population. Page said that Lyon County is not poised to have that type of growth at this time.
Page explained that the workshop idea came after County Commissioners voiced concerns over infrastructure, staffing, homelessness and facilities.
The workshop will discuss the advantages and disadvantages to an increase in growth in Lyon County including, but not limited to issues surrounding, water, waste water, infrastructure, facilities, schools, staffing, public safety and public health, controlling growth, building moratorium and sprawl.
Lyon County expects the following entities to be present and present information to the Board of Commissioners:
— Lyon County Community Development
— Lyon County Utilities
— Lyon County Sheriff’s Office
— Lyon County Fire Protection Districts
— Lyon County School District
— Nevada Division of Water Resources
— Nevada Division of Environmental Protection
Page explained the Board will not be asked to take action during the workshop. He anticipates that the presentation and discussions will generate future policy items to be addressed by the Board of Commissioners.
